Hello I thinking about building a new computer for a family member and had question about using a 64 Bit CPU. Well should I go with a 64 bit or 32 bit processor? Is the the 64 bit technology popular enough now that most any application will support 64 bit?

I would go with the 64 bit. Yes it is mainstream enough now that apps arent near the problem they use to be.

Well even in the early days of 64-bit CPU architecture, you could still use a 64-bit processor and install a 32-bit operating system.
But if you are building a modern computer this is not even a real question, because they don't even make desktop processors without 64-bit support anymore.
As far as driver support/etc, there are still a few issues that are few and far between. Overall the support is absolutely there and almost everything you try on a 64-bit OS will work fine. I highly recommend a 64-bit operating system because as time goes on, less than 4 GB of memory just is not enough.

every modern processor is 64-bit compatible, and you'll only need 64-bit if you plan on using more then 4gb or ram

Thanks for the replies. I figured 64 bit was the standard now, I just wanted to make sure before I got one that I wouldnt have much problem with the drivers and all.

I meant I run the 64-bit version of Windows. I have had a few problems with QuickBooks but other than that no other problems.

This is a common misconception about 64bit processors. Memory-mapped files are starting to become a problem in old 32-bit architectures as files of over 4 GB file become more common, mainly due to large HD video files. You will notice an increase in performance with software like encoders, decoders (VLC, FFMPeg, etc) and encryption software...and you'll only need 64-bit if you plan on using more then 4gb or ram
