Newly discovered Mayan calendar goes way past 2012

First paragraph:

Newly discovered wall writings found in Guatemala show the famed Maya culture's obsession with cycles of time. But they also show calendars that go well beyond 2012, the year when the vanished civilization, according to popular culture, expected the end of the world.

How are we supposed to take this article seriously when they cite false myths about the mayans predicting 2012 to be the end of the world? They never said such things...

You mean:

"So much for the supposed end of the world," says archaeologist William Saturno of Boston University, lead author of a study in the journal Science, which reported the discovery on Thursday.

I believe he was saying this should put an end to those supposing the theory.

Either way, that quote doesn't really hurt the evidence they found.

The guy in the video also says something along the lines of "the idea of these 14 baktun's being the expiration date is something pop culture has placed on it"

Yea true

Interesting point made by the top commentor though

"leaving only a few birch-bark books dating to perhaps the 14th century as records of their astronomy" conveniently skipping out the part where the catholic church ordered everything they could find to be burned due to its heretical nature, the real reason there is so little mayan literature left, and of course the origin of the 2012 myth by overly zealous priests.

Yea, I agree its not a great example of reporting, I don't think USA Today would be happy about a writer saying that, even though it was true.

I just wanted to post this mostly to the people who still believe in the world ending just because they thought the Mayan calendar was ending, and partly because I find ancient/older civilizations really interesting.

Here is an article that looks a little better, although I just scanned it quickly.

@Peruviandank: Great post bro

Tick tick tick, that is the sound of your internal clock. That is the day I'm most worried about which will end my time on earth. The mayans aren't to blame, its govt. Its in our face but we cannot see it because the symbolism is obscure. The time isn't what is important as much as the day and cycle of all things celestial. The mayans believed in it and the elites are working on their own but mainly with their believe in the power of numbers. Its irony that in numbers we outnumber them......yet we know but don't speak out and force them out so it must be destiny i guess.
