What size drill bit do I need?

Discussion in 'Marijuana Consumption Q&A' started by csayer, May 10, 2012.

1. I've been smoking for about a year now, but I'm getting tired of smoking out of one hitters! I'm on a budget so I want to make my own bong. Does anybody know what size drill bit I should use to make the hole for a 14.5 downstem?

2. Whatever the Outside Diameter is on your downstem.

3.
Drill bit? LOL

this is a drill bit:

good luck smoking out of that.

you're looking for a socket my dude:

newbies, I swear!
Nooo he means glass drill bit to drill glass derp

4. yeah let me just delete that post real quick lmao

my bad, dude. people around here make the mistake of calling sockets drill bits all the time, luckily you're not that dumb ;)

5. All good lol. I haven't ordered the downstem yet, so I don't know what the diameter is! How could I solve this problem?

6. does it say on the product on the site what your diameter is?

7. There are options of 10cm, 12cm, 15cm, and 17 cm. I'm not sure which part they're talking about though.

8. post some links/pictures of what you're planning to do here

9. I always wanted to do this! Op have you considered making a glass gravity bong? It should be easier since you need diamond tipped drill bits to drill glass

10. I'm planning on taking a glass tequila bottle, using a diamond tipped bit to drill a hole in it, and then buy downstem and bowl for it! I need to know what size drill bit I should use to drill the hole in the bottle. That does sound like a good idea inclusive!

11. If it works that would be sick!!!! I'd imagine it will be very tough to get the downstem to be airtight though.

12. Yeah op.. your gonna have a hard time with this.
you can cut the bottom off with like string and alcohol. Then you need a socket and a metal cap. or put a bowl on the top!
That's perfect. Damn wish I woulda thought of that before!
And op try to get a bigger glass bottle. I know you can get some online for really cheap.
I once made a gravity bong out of a huge grape juice bottle and it was sick

13. Thanks for the ideas!

14. 14mm is just over a half inch I'd get a .75 bit and then use an 18mm downstem it would fit much better then use epoxy or hot glue to seal it

15. My friend who made a bong out of a Grey Goose handle brought the clean downstem and bottle to Home Depot and had one of the guys work the drill and drill it for them :D worked beautifully

16. This sounds great. Please post a picture when you get done with it. Could you imagine if you break a couple bottles doing this, hell you will have to keep drinking until you get it right.

I don't see this as a problem at all. He will need to go to a Smoke Shop and buy the rubber grommet thing that goes on the outside of the down stem. When he does that it should seal. I also have to use white plumbers tape on my china piece to make it air tight.

To the OP, you do not need to know the down stem diameter because you need this rubber thing from the head shop. That will be bigger then the down stem and slides on over the down stem before going into the glass. So you will need the diameter of the rubber piece with the stem in it which will be much bigger then just the stem.

Remember to post pictures when done.

17. ^ you do need to know the downstem size a gormoumt will help some but it won't help if it's too big or small

18. It is not easy to drill glass. Good luck and post pics.

19. I've drilled a few tanks in my day you need a dimond bit drill then you fill the bottle with sand and run cool water over what you're drilling
