PC grow..... hopefully advice needed
Posted 24 April 2012 - 04:22 PM
Here is the start of my PC grow.
I went to the skip as usual to dump some old rubbish yesterday and found one of the biggest PC cases ever made I think ( actually 2 of them, however one still had a quad core intel, nvidia, 8gb ram, full watercooling system etc in it..... who the hell would throw that out??? ) so I threw them in the boot of the car fast before anyone caught me and escaped lol. ( Yes I know, im a tink! )
Anyhow, I had been pondering a PC grow lately and made one but unfortunately the case was quite small and had rubbish fans etc and the temperature whilst empty got to 30oC which I thought was too hot.
This will be my second attempt and hopefully it works out better...... heres some pics......
As you can see the case still needs covered in aluminium foil or similar and the side panels I was going to use the silver bubble insulation for.
Also one of the fans is in an awkward place however i'm hoping it will still be manageable.
I have also ordered a fan speed controller for up to 4 fans for the case.
The case internal sizes are
19" high though 15" to the light.
The light is a 125w dual spectrum CFL
There are also 2 fan exits above it however because of the size of the lamp, and the stealth look I have covered these up.
Ohh, and I have a thermometer which tracks max / min temps
Ant help / advice would be greatly appreciated - I have ordered some seeds however there appears to have been an issue with the supplier so I will wait and see if I have to use an alternative source.
I had ordered all autoflowering feminised seeds and will do so again if I have to.

I forgot to mention, I'm only doing a pc grow because I cannot yet afford a stealthy looking cupboard or similar. One day
Interesting idea, but not a lot of room. If it works, you should have a quick turnaround, since you will have to keep the plant small. And trim it so that it grows to fit the space. Like a Bonsai.
As far as cheap containers for grows, I've seen two big plastic laundry baskets with the lids put together by cutting the bottom out of one and taping it to the bottom one. You can cut holes for fans and anything else you need and you have a lid a the top.
And since rummaging thru junk isn't an issue with you, you should be able to find an old dresser drawers for free. Take out the drawers and create your space.
I love re-purposing things.
Good luck and don't get discouraged.

Ordered some aluminium tape today and some diamond mylar sheeting ( 5 meters x 1.25 meters of sheeting, and 50 meters tape........ as little overkill but never mind! )
STILL waiting to hear back from the company I ordered seeds from tempted to cancel and order from elsewhere now - I'll give it 24 hours for a response.
Also pondering a stick in the earth PH tester as atm I only have some old strips.
Ohhh, ordered an aero-pot propagator as well for when I can take cuttings ( obviously not from auto's ) since I haver failed miserably every time I've tried cuttings so far
Next on the list is read about nutes and get something sorted out there.

Fan controller came today
Decided I didnt like the fan in the middle at the bottom also so cut location holes for it at the end and drilled air holes as pictured.
Made a few other changes here and there, tidied wires a little and bolted 12V PSU to rear of case.
Been running for nearly an hour on full speed now and temps are........
In case 21.7oC
Not bad - By the time theres mylar in there, and obstructions hopefully she will get to around 25oC and no more
Thoughts ? Ideas?

Half speed test commencing now
Shadow, I will watch yours --- a tip though, coolermaster fans run the slowest of any I have found, are the quietest, and seem to move the most air as well.... I'm very impressed

Strange, I guess the fans are just super efficient, trying on quarter speed now.

I assume the fan on the bottom is intake and top exhaust? If so you can probably do away with the bottom fan and just use both as exhausts with the holes in the bottom as passive intakes. Also you'll probably find the temp rise once the plants in also its best to measure the temp at the canopy as this will be higher than at the base but with the size of the case I doubt they will be a problem.
All in all though setup is looking sweet, defo pulling up a chair for this . I tried rocking out a 125W in a 16" PC case it got pretty hot so am using 65W CFL and results are looking quite good so far so yours should be epic

I think you might be right about the temp higher up, and yes, lower is intake, upper exhaust.
How can I stop the light being so visible out of the rear fan ? Smell isn't an issue so I hadn't even thought about foam.... probably bugger the fan knowing my luck lol.
Maybe some sort of plastic / metal frame so the intake is at the bottom ? still let out a little probably though ?
Anyhow, just subbed to your thread - I also plan one of those net things but I might " acquire " something tomorrow when I go to the dump hahaha ( chicken wire okay or a little too easy to cut into the branches ?
Temp check - full speed, less than 2cm from the lamp is 34oC - temp 5-10cm from the lamp is 24oC
This should be acceptable isn't it ?

Chicken wire might be ok personally I would go for something wider so it defo won't cut into the plant, or you could LST (tie the plant down) instead.
Those temps sound fine as long as it doesn't go beyond like 30 you should be fine, optimum is about 25 celcius or 75 farrenheit.

temp has now settled to 30.6oC 2cm from lamp on full speed fans..... I am happy with that tbh, don't want them 2cm from the lamp anyhow
Hopefully my diamond mylar etc arrives tomorrow
