Using a 400 Watt HPS grow light in closet?

  1. I'll be buying my flowering lamp tomorrow hopefully, after looking through alot of different lights online i found a cheaper HPS setup that suits my needs. I know I can get very good results from an HPS lamp but what worries me is the heat this thing is gonna throw off, I'm growing in a small closet space, and if this thing raises the temp too high im worried about the fire hazards, and frying my plants, what kind of temps do you think I could expect from a 400 Watt HPS bulb?
and how can i vent from a closet?

Ummm, you may wanna send that HPS back and get one that has a COOL TUBE so you can vent the lamps hot air into the ceiling from your closet. Basically you're gonna be making a hole (4 or 6 inches) in your ceiling to your attic so you can vent all that hot air. I wouldn't worry about fire hazards from the heat but fire hazards from shitty electrical wiring can happen.

Also, what do you plan on doing about the odor? Better get yourself a activated carbon charcoal filter as well. You can connect it all to your Cool Tube while you vent it into your ceiling. Oh, and of course you'll need an inline fan, Vortex is the popular choice and Valueline is the cheaper choice.

  3. Is it a sealed hood? Ventable. Or is it a cool tube, or just a wing reflector? And how big is your space? I run a 400 in a small area, and have run it in a smaller area than I do now. About 2.5x3x5ft. tall. If you vent it properly you can run it in a pretty small area. Now I pull air from outside the room, usually in the 60's, straight through my sealed hood, and straight out the room. That's how I can run it so cool. Give me more info, and I will try to help you out.

Well this is the rig id be buying, its from a growers supply warehouse about an hour from me, seems like a good deal for the wattage.
HTG Supply - HTGSupply 400 watt High Pressure Sodium Grow Light

The hood looks closed to me, dont know how Id attatch a fan or vent to that. I'm going to be running in a pretty small area. the closet I've got setup is only 44 inches wide by about 7 feet tall.

  5. I don't think that hood is vented. If it was sealed it would have 4" or 6" vent holes on each side. 44"x 7 feet is pretty descent size. As long as you vent the room you will probably be alright.

  6. cool, probably gonna pick that up tomorrow. How would you recommend I vent the heat from it if the hood has no vent holes?

  7. Gonna have to get yourself a vent fan, and exhaust the hot air from the top of the room.

  8. alright, ill start lookin for a decent vent fan and ill probably end up blowing it out the back of the closet because its a closet between two rooms, i can get at the back wall from the room behind it and cut a small hole at the top if need be.

With the rig you're buying you can't vent the lamps heat. That HPS light is meant for a large room, not closets. You know what else creates a lot of heat beside the bulb? The ballast. You'll want an external ballast that you can keep outside of your closet.

    Cool Tube

Or your other option is to vent just closet itself and hope that will keep the temps at an acceptable level, but if it doesn't work then you'll need a new Cool Tube, or similar type, HPS lamp. Are you getting a carbon filter to scrub the odor?

  10. ^That's one beast of a tube on there! I use a 6" tube for my 400w closet and temps are within 4 or 5 of the room temp. So much better to over do it with hvac than under- your yields and quality will increase the closer you bring it to ideal conditions

  11. I am In a 2.5x2.5x5' using 400 hps with inline fan sucking hot air out, fan blowing outside in, ground up. Never any heat issues no smell either no fire hazards and I produce sum Krippy kronic for my self. I only use hps the whole time simple is better long timer here

  12. If you are a capable enough DIY'er you can keep the hood you have and must turn it into a vented hood yourself. Plexiglass cut to the right size, a couple of small brackets, a hole on each end of the hood and some ducting/duct tape and you have a vented hood, you just need a fan & filter.

  13. One side of the hps is open to the tent, sucking air from the fan pushing in from bottom. Thru lamp to inline 4" fan then a charcoal filter. Never had an heat issue at all. Peoria say hps is for large rooms that's crazy. U just need to have it hooked up correctly fresh air in Hott lamp air out thru inline.

  14.
  15. I like to go filter hood fan out... the filter cleans the air b4 hitting the fan motor... and they are used for pulling air not pushing... but either way works with a fan, hood and filter

  16. Hey bro, I recently started a 400 in a 2/4/9 close.
Have ez cool 6 Hood. Using 6 inch inline.
Also a 50 cfm bathroom ventilation fan above door.
And a 9" personal high velocity fan on floor.
Running at 89 RH is 39%
Can't keep this setup under 80
I'm going to HD to return the 50cfm its loud. 4.0 sound rate.
getting a 70 cfm with 1.5 sons rating. Should be less than half the noise.
I'm also going to relocate the ventilation fan to the wall next to Hood exhuast. Hopefully this helps.
    What do u guys think?
