Straining weed from oil

Discussion in 'Weed Edibles' started by Slushy, Apr 5, 2012.

  1. What's the easiest way to strain your herb when making oil? That's the only confusing part for me. Could I just squeeze the weed or put it into a coffee filter? Let me know.

  2. A napkin or coffee filter, make sure it dosent break or you will have to start over.

  3. They sell strainers of all shapes and sizes at stores or online? I have only had to do it a couple times, ended up having to use the permanent coffee filter in my coffee machine..not bad :confused_2:

  4. I'm fucking retarded.... I just realized I could use my mesh strainer in my kitchen.

  5. I would suggest that you first strain it through something coarse, like that big wire mesh strainer in the kitchen. This removes the big stuff, making your second straining go faster.

Now you have an oily dripping mess in the strainer- just set it dripping into a pan or bowl for the moment.

Now that you have the big stuff out of your oil, you can use a coffee filter, or several layers of cloth (wet it down with some plain cooking oil) or white paper towels (also oiled). The best way to do it is to start it dripping before you go to bed, because it takes a L-O-N-G time if you are watching it! lol

There is still a lot of oil in the greens you set aside, and I don't like to waste any! I take a piece of clean cloth (oil it first) and place the oily greens in the middle of the cloth, make it into a bundle and squeeze as much as possible out of the lump. Just add it to what you already have dripping through your filter.

Make sure there is no water left in your canna-oil, or you may find it has developed MOLD!

  6. Thanks for the responses guys. I just ground up about a gram of some good bud and put it in one of those cup cake moldings. I put it in the oven (with olive oil covering the bud and tin foil over the mixture) for 25 minutes at 350 degrees. I took out the concoction and put it into a fine mesh strainer and proceeded to press down on the weed to get out as much oil as possible. Is that enough to get effective results? I mixed it into some ice cream and ate it about 25 minutes ago and am starting to feel a slight buzz.

  7. Not just a french press.... The good thing about this particular one is that once you are done pressing there is a dry disk of material that you can just take out and toss... Very easy cleanup. If you get it make sure to get the metal filter and not the paper ones.

  8. you can use a large number of common household items. Two that haven't been mentioned here are a garlic press or a clean pantyhose. Its easy, you basicly use the intstructions granny storm crow gave when using the pantyhose

  9. You can get cheese cloth at any supermarket (in the baking eisle) for $2. Just make a little pouch and squeeze like you're ringing out a towel.

  10. Use cheese cloth as mentioned above and if desired, drape a couple segments of it across a handheld metal strainer so you have both the strainer and cloth preventing any residue from contaminating your butter. Very cheap, easy and effective. Be careful when squeezing the butter out if you're not letting it cool down from cooking before straining. The butter will be hot!

  11. Take a paper towel, split it in two pieces and put one of those pieces in a glass cup. Works like a charm, just did it earlier. Just make sure its a glass cup, plastic will melt if you strain it right after taking it out of the oven (my dumbass did that).

  12. I use a funnel with a piece of cheese cloth in it, making sure that there is plenty of cheesecloth left outside the cone so that I can wring out the cheesecloth to recover the oil at the end. Try to plan ahead because this can become one big oily slimy mess real fast and you can lose a lot of the oil.

  13. Wet the cheesecloth first with whatever oil you used so it doesn't soak up your good herbed oil.

  14.
Well you sold me on this way.  I saw that there was outstanding feedback for both the coffee press and the reusable SS filter, so I got both.  $41.17 shipped, but will save me from a lot of straining and waiting with my cannabis-infused coconut oil (YESSS).

Thanks, I have been looking for something exactly along these lines.

  15. I found reusable fine mesh metal coffee filters at the local dollar store.

  16.
That is what I started out using when I first started making oil, but mashing small amounts at a time got so time-consuming and deformed the filter so much that I wanted to find another way.

The Aerobie Aeropress arrived in the mail a couple days ago and I tried it out for the first time last night.  WOW, was that money well-spent.  It makes it so easy to extract as much oil as possible from the bud/oil mix, and leaves behind only a dried-out "puck" of waste plant matter.  From now on, I will only use this method.

Do you use the standard, fine, or extra fine steel mesh?
