Dummy's Organic Run

  1. Thanks Papawayne! I appreciate the advice. Before I got this post from you, I watered them in order to get a reading of ph runoff so I guess at this point, I will let them dry out over the next few days.

My starter mix was 25% EWC with 75% Light Warrior. I was able to see the roots for all my plants while they were still in the party cups. I had them in transparent cups that sat in another cup wrapped in black tape. This way I could lift the cup out and see the root growth. They were all white and appeared healthy...Im not debating your advice just trying to understand the problem better so please dont take offense.

I did top dress with a little soil acidifier as I stated above. 1/4 tsp and watered it in after I got the high ph readings. How long should I just let it dry out and do nothing else?

  2. Hey DDD,

You couldn't offend me if you tried, so don't worry about it. :D

The condition of your leaves - flat, curling down into a ball - that is the classic indicator of over-watering. Nothing else causes that look, not PH imbalances, not over-fertilization, not nutrient lockout or lack of any particular nutrient. Over-watering will produce symptoms that look similar to all of those, but the primary cause is a lack of oxygen to the roots.

You can't assign a time period for when to water again. How long it takes for your soil to dry out depends on temperature/humidity/air flow in your grow area. Moisture meters and the "finger test" are okay indicators of when to water in normal situations, but in a stressed situation like you have at the moment, it would be best to let your plants tell you when they need water.

Wait until they look on the verge of wilting. You'll see the stems of the leaves start to sag, then it's time to water again, but only very lightly in the beginning. Don't flood the pot or you'll be back in the same situation.

I know how hard it is to wait it out. You look at your plants 3 or 4 times a day, 3 - 4 - 5 days in a row, and nothing is changing. They look the same, or maybe worse, and you want to DO something. But, you are doing something - you are allowing the soil conditions to return to normal so the plant can begin the process of recovery. If you water again before the pots dry out completely, you will only prolong the agony.

    See ya...

  3. Hey DDD, i too just start my grow, seedling are just about a week old. I think my White Widow had the same problem of over watering. Its little seedling leaves completely curled down into a ball, i transplanted her into a 1.5 liter pot with dry soil and hit them with a molasses and liquid kelp extract foliar spray. The white widows new growth looks a lot healthier, and after reading what papawayne wrote i wont be watering for a while. Thank papawayne

  4. Thanks again Papawayne! I'll let em sit for as long as it takes. I appreciate your input and I hope that you'll keep dropping in to help stay on course;).

Thanks for dropping in Nacious! Yep, I gotta sit back and let em dry out...gonna be kind of hard not doing anything.

  5. 3D - sux to hear about the plants man but I agree with papawayne . Looks to be a bit of over watering. I usually water when I see the leaves wilting a little or drooping down a little. I know you will get it straightened out and I look forward to the porn! I have never done an organic grow so Im afraid I will be no help , but hopefully I learn a thing or two.
Ill be subbed in for sure!

  6. Thanks dropping by bro! Yeah, I took the advice and am just going to let them dry out . I looked at them today and I notice that I still have some healthy looking new growth coming in so Im guessing that everything is still in control somewhat.

  7. I love this thread, and the help thats been found is awesome... wish i could help but im out of my area here, but fun to read none the less...

keep those updates rolling... im slow and pics help

  8. there's this saying.... the best things come to those who wait. it's been true with me soooo far loll

  9. Hey DDD,

That's good news! I didn't mean to leave you with the impression that you're roots were totally fucked up, just that they needed some delicate handling to overcome the problem and to keep it from getting worse. I know you'll get it all straightened out.

    See ya...

  10. Yeah, Im one of those types who finds it hard to leave the plants alone and just let em do their thing...it does help though that I have my lights on from 8pm to 2pm for the veg cycle. I did a little price comparison for running my lights during off peak hours compared to during the peak hours. Saves a bit of money in the long run plus it keeps me from going in and out of the tent multiple times a day.

  11. lol if i had dark hrs for my ladies, having the lights off during peak hours would proly help me out too but wouldn't be much fun more like torture lol

  12. I know what you mean. I wish that I had enough room for a multi-room set up. That way I could mess around with the plants all day! I think that I might enjoy a job at a grow-op. Growing and cultivating all day. Imagine the knowledge that could be gained with a job in one of those places!

  13. Update:

Snapped a few pics before lights out! You can see how the new growth is coming in pretty nice:). Those bottom leaves that started getting the necrosis seem to be drying out. I hope that is the worst of it.

  14. Here is a pic of my little one that originally grew with only one leaf on the side. Its catching up to it's siblings!:D

  15. man i almost had a job at a hydro store in long beach b4 i moved... suck but im getting helped right back into the door lol

  16. I think that hydro shops tend to get a bad rep amongst "those in the know" just because of the fact they try to push stuff on growers that arent absolutely needed. When I went into San Diego for a concert there was a booth for a hydro shop there and this guy was trying to convince my wife and I that we HAD to go with a 1000watt light set up and ANYTHING less than that was a waste of time. I didnt want to offend the guy so I just told my wife we needed to move on.

Another store where I get some amendments from on occasion (Im trying to stop going so often) has some pretty cool guys working there. The only bad thing is that once I start talking organics and asking questions, they all take off on me!!:D I need to find a good nursery and just hook up my own stuff like the others here.

  17. Hey ddd. Hope u dont mind me snoopin ur journal :)

  18. Not at all bro!! I thought that I had invited you already? Either way, Im hoping to get as much traffic here as I can! I hope that you'll offer up some more of your expertise so I can rock this grow! Thanks for coming through!

  19. Lol sorry, that invite may have gone right over me lol. Any questions, i'll give my opinion at any time. Im kinda behind, so i'll take a quick skim thru :)

  20. that's the truth... i hate going in there and they think they know what's best or try to push something on me when i keep saying that i don't need it. but i nip it reeeeeeaaaaaaaaallll quick, i guess (ni@@a) faces scare them off cause they just look at me like ma bad just ask me if you need anything. I remember this one guy didn't even listen when i told him i had all the main nutes i needed and kept trying to tell me i needed a grow & flower nute that all i had was additives, then tried to sell me the same stuff i told him i had shm. sorry about the run on but i just found a couple of nurseries around the area but i've never thought about going in one except to get odor eliminating plants.... what would be the difference between the hydro shop and a nursery? You have me curious. And i might press my luck with this new hydro store i found, she said she'll give me a 400w system with an extra light and some extras for $250. see if i can get some traffic there and get a job lol.
