the water in a bong acts as a filter between you and the smoke. when you take a bong hit, you will notice that it burns hotter and faster than a regular pipe because the amount of space in the bong needs to be filled, thus when you suck, the pressure builds and basically allows you to take bigger hits than you ever could out of pipe simply because you can't suck that hard . . .

Anyways, the smoke comes down the stem and into the water, where the heavier combustables such as ash and tar remain in the water, while the lighter carcinogens rise out of the water into the chamber. The longer you let the chamber fill with smoke before inhaling it all, the more smoke you will have, thus coating yourself in large amounts of still toxic smoke.

The study that you refer to is probably not accurate due to the fact that everyone takes hits differently and holds smoke longer than others, so unless they were timing the hit and estimating the amount of tar in each hit (as it varies from bud to bud as well), there is no real way of even getting close to the answer. My opinion is that a bubbler is a good way to go because it filters the water but doesn't chamber the smoke as much, making it "more safe" to smoke.

think of it like this.... you smnoke out of your little pipe, and the smoke goes straight from the bowl to your lungs... mayble a little bit of tar and shit gets stuck to the side of the pipe

now lets say you smoke a bong... the smoke passes through water first.... and the water gets dirty... so that would tell me that it is cleaning the "dirt" out of the smoke, otherwise where did it come from? and if it wasn't for the water, then all that "dirt" would go down into your lungs

I think that it doesn't make more tar or whatever, but you just get more in one hit (a hit out of a bong is a lot more than a hit out of pipe)... but I would say if everyone is smoking the exact same amount out of the two different types of pieces, then the damage from the regular pipe would be greater, or about the same

basically most of the stuff you said in your post was contrary to to the things I've learned, so it's gonna be tough to get me to believe that stuff

Also, the tobacco and alcohol companies know about tobacco, and they know about alcohol... you wouldn't go to a mechanic to get your computer fixed would you? no... so don't go to those assholes for weed info... come to us...

Yeah the atricle is long but it has good info. I'm gonna still smoke out of my bong but I'm gonna cut back some.

look, i think that study is highly inaccurate, i mean they claim that the most thc you can get out of the possible thc in a nug is 1 percent of what is actually on the bud. that's ridiculous, if that were the case then vaporizers, which deliver nearly 90 percent thc, would fucking destroy you if everybody was used to 1 percent of thc. now don't get me wrong, vaporizers are more efficient at thc extraction, but 1% compared to nearly %90 is an insane statement to make.

i can honestly say that if that study is accurate, then there was no water in those bongs they were using for the test.

buddy, i hope you know we aren't all brainwashed to believe that pot isn't going to harm you in some way or another. we're going to get tar in our lungs yes, and there really won't be much of a difference between a bong and a pipe. smoke is smoke.

I'm not dissing bongs. People think bongs are alot more "healtier"(sp) than using a pipe or joing but actually it's not. I'm just letting people know what they should know.

There is another thread about this in the Seasoned Tokers forum. This whole discussion is moot to me. All MJ smoking implements will get you high. When was the last time anyone counted the amount of THC you took into your body? Never...

All, Don't let these studies get your undies in a wad, you are still going to get high and you generally aren't going to use that much more weed with one item over another.

Bongs may filter out some THC, but I like not inhaling ash...Ash from any organic substance is highly radioactive (measured this with a geiger counter).

So you guys can SUCK in all that ash with your pipes/joints.
