Gurren Lagann was fantastic. Easily one of my favorite mecha genre. Good to see someone else who enjoyed Lain, though it was a true mindfuck. Between alternating realities and keeping the viewer guessing on which was real and which was not and then the sub-plots... oh my. I had to watch it 3 times to truly appreciate it. +rep!

Im not really big into anime, and in my youth i was a bit prejudiced against it because up until age 15 (coincidentally, this is when i started puffin da ganj) I was closed-minded and kind of a dick about it. But once i became more open-minded i watched "samurai champloo". Not because I like anime, but because I was studying japanese history and I was really into it. It was awesome. I recomend this series to anyone who thinks samurai are cool. Theres even an episode where they accidently burn a field of sticky icky and get the whole town lifted.


After that i watched a shit load of kenshin (more samurai) and taht was cool too.

Yeah, Samurai Champloo surprised me. I didn't think I'd like it and I end up loving it as well. Kenshin leads to Samurai X which is absolutely mind blowing. It takes all the great things about Kenshin and makes it grittier and more revealing.

Right now about to watch some Code Geass: Lelouch of the Rebellion. It's kinda girly drawn, but there are mecha, of which I am a huge fan (Evangelion, Macross Frontier, Gundam, etc..). And the story line seems pretty solid. I've been avoiding watching it on Cartoon Network on Adult Swim because English dubbing drives me nuts. I'd rather watch something in subtitles and just decipher the Japanese (polyglot).

I have been watching alot of anime lately. When I was younger I watched pokemon (great), digimon (shit) and DBZ. Lupin the 3rd is what got me into watching it regularly though. Bleach is one of my favourites, I skipped all of the bleach filler so I haven't really seen the whole series, just the main storyline. I have heard Yu Yu Hakusho is similar and much better so I am downloading it right now.

Samurai Champloo, Cowboy Bebop, Death note, FMA, grave of the fireflies and Monster are all great anime. I watched like 15 episodes of Trigun and I just couldn't get into it. Its too goofy. But recently someone on /a/ told me that it gets better so I may download it again and give it another chance.

Right now I am watching Naruto, Outlaw Star and Hellsing.

wow, I thought this thread had died... Nice to see a few anime fans out there in the stoner-verse. Yu Yu Hakusho is pretty good but the last arc might not be.... good. The rest you mentioned is either good or allright aside from pokemon and digimon. Kiddie gate-way anime(mine was Voltron and DBZ), nothin' wrong with it, but I'm about a level 3, as opposed to the noobs bein' level .5-ish.

You mentioned only about two or three good shows. The rest (the ones they show on Adult Swim and what used to be Toonami) are pretty lame. I don't really do the shonen thing though. I'm more into the harem/ecchi/slapstick comedies. I love shit that can't possibly make sense with whacky ass characters. A few to mention:

The Melancholy of Haruhi Suzumiya
Nagaserate Airantou
Toradora!
Green Green

Don't get me wrong, I'll watch anything, but my preference is just goofy ass comedies.

I just started getting into anime earlier this year so that's why most of the stuff I watch is pretty mainstream. Im easy to please though, I can watch anything

I understand. That explains it pretty good. I started getting into anime about 10 years ago now, and have been to a lot of conventions and what not so I've had a lot of time to get away from all the mainstream stuff. I'll edit this post though with some not so mainstream animes that I think you could possibly get into from what you like now.

I love anime been watching it for I think 10 years now. I still remember as a kid watching DBZ when it first came on I go to this convention in town thats once a year, its actually pretty cool they have live bands some bands from Japan and a rave. I read manga to just not to much

I'm with ya on them goofy-ass comedies. You want some true insanity? Watch Excel Saga. And if you want musical insanity, try Nerima Daikon Brothers. Both by the same director, they manage to draw and re-draw the borders of fuckin' nuts. If they don't break you, try Puni Puni Poemy for the coup de grace.

I'd also recommend Bokusatsu Tenshi Dokuro-chan (Bludgeoning Angel Dokuro-chan) if you want some crazy ecchi slapstick harem with a twist. Definitely my favorite new comedy (it's not exactly new, but newer than some of the other shit I'm into)

An older gem some have overlooked is Golden Boy. You can pick up the whole series for like 15 bucks, and it's well worth it.

No need to be hatin' on the mainstream. I'm not into it either but the newer fans gotta start on something or the anime bubble bursts.

I used to be REALLY into anime and manga, but I got bored with it couple years back

I still really love the art style, and Princess Mononoke is one of my favorite movies. All of the Miyazaki films are gorgeous, and carry pretty strong messages about saving the environment, which I'm all for

You should look into Club to Death Angel Dokuro Chan and Ranma 1/2

All of those are filled with some action. Evangelion is kind of a head trip.

To everyone else, I'm not hating on mainstream anime, because that is what got me into it as well, I'm just saying I'm no longer a fan of it since I've been around anime long enough to get out of it.

I say we keep this tread going. Update everytime you are watching a new series.
