If you're going for top of the line, meaning most powerful all around, you could probably stick to a certain few brands. I believe intel has the best processor right now, but a high end AMD really wouldn't make much difference, and they can usually come cheaper. As for motherboards and power supplies, I would simply look for a new-ish board with slots for what youre going to be putting in your machine. I have an Asus board which works fine for my needs. Make sure you match your PCI slots and memory prongs (180 or 240) to what's on your board, or you'll have a headache. Power supplies, I don't really know. Again, probably just go for a new make which has enough output to support your other pieces.

Greetings,

Without knowing what you currently have, It's difficult to give you much of a recommendation.

First off, I commend you go with a name-brand motherboard, and buy a warranty. It's one of the few products that's actually worth it. Also, invest with your motherboard, it's essential. Get PCIe, a Socket 775, a good Bus size, and preferably DDR3 (DDR2 will suffice also, but ensure it's Dual-Channel capable).

With your CPU, you're want to go for at least a high powered duo-core, and better yet a quad-core. Multi lacing is now the biggest thing in gaming, so having a multiple execution core system is well worth it, because it will be very relevant for a long time.

RAM is very much based on the type of motherboard you buy, so you can do much until you've found a good motherboard. GPU is also largely motherboard specific, it depends what on-board technologies you have at your disposal.

HD, PSU and Media is all peripheral and you should purchase at your own discretion.

Hope that helped

Yours Truly,

Greetings again,

The CPU you have right now, the AMX FX-55 is a 939 Socket, an older model. Your new motherboard/CPU will almost certainly be 775 Socket, which are totally incompatible. You'll need to buy both new.

Your RAM is also obsolete, it's DDR RAM, not the more modern DDR2 or DDR3 RAM. It's usable, just not very useful. You will have a hard time finding a good motherboard that it will work on.

Your PSU should be fine, 540 Watt will still run most rigs.

hope that helped,

Yours Truly,

Greetings,

The price on 4-8 gigs of RAM varies - what kind of RAM?

Greetings,

It's hard to estimate off the top of my head. I recently bought and assembled a new computer myself. It cost me less than $1100 with taxes and shipping.

Although, I only bought Motherboard, RAM, CPU, GPU. Everything else was salvaged, the O.S. didn't cost me anything and neither did any of my setup programs.

Yours Truly,
Sam_Spade
