Gaming Computer Build (Advice Needed)

Ok, so with my tax return I got today ($700, w00t!), I'm gonna go ahead and get my gaming computer as soon as possible.

Here is what I'm getting more or less, a fellow GC member made up the wishlist for me.

https://secure.newegg.com/NewVersion...istTitle=GCguy

How does that look to you all?

I've still got several months before I NEED it. (release of Spore). And that's mainly what I'm getting it for, so that I can run Spore flawlessly. I am going to want to run other games on it as well. Until the release of Spore, I was thinking I'd get COD4 or Gears of War. And both of those games have pretty awesome graphics. Will the computer above run both of those perfect? If not, what can I add/upgrade to run it perfect?

The video card is an 8600, and I'll spring the extra cash for an 8800 if it makes that much of a difference.

Also, the reviews on the motherboard are kind of iffy. Lots are saying the BIOS isn't all that great. I'm pretty computer savvy, but not so much hardware and overclocking and stuff. I just want to get the gear, install my OS, and start gaming. Will the current setup allow me to do that?

My final question is, will I receive all the necessary cables to hook up everything? It looks like hardware you order you get that specific piece and nothing else, no cables or anything. What cables will I need, and where can I order them? (not seeing them on NewEgg)

I'm probably going to need a few more questions answered, but let's start with that.

are you looking to OC? if not then you definitely don't need some of the parts listed in the wishlist. that will ultimately determine what you need. you can save a lot of money going to the non-oc or light oc route.

you could use a different motherboard for sure whether you OC or not. P5E is pricey and there are others that are comparable.

The case can be swapped with a generic and then you can add your own case fans to improve the airflow. There are so many cases that are FAR or have rebates that will bring the cost down.

you don't have to get a silverstone powersupply but you do need something at least 500-600 depending on how much power you are using. I would total up everything including the extra power needed for the vid card and see what you're left with. 750 may be excessive if you're not OC'ing and if you're power usage totals end up being less.

cpu 6750 is not worth it at this point. especially with the newer chips released (8300/8400). In fact, i was able to snag an E6300 from Frys for $40!!!! since they are getting rid of older stock processors. There are definitely better deals out there for you CPU.

Memory is too expensive. OCZ has several promotions running for 2GB for 30 bucks after rebates for DDR2800. I would not buy the memory at such a high price for 2GB. Not worth it.

I use the AC Freezer 7 and i love it. Works awesome for cooling. Also, once again you might not need this kind of HSF if you're not oc'ing. you can use a comparable and slighty cheaper one. newer intel processors already run at very low temps and low voltages.

No, I'm not planning on OCing at all.

I really like that case because it has removable filters. And living on a farm, there's always dust and stuff out here, so I'm pretty set on the case.

I'm really not too worried about the cost at all, I'd rather have something expensive that works great, than something cheaper that might not work as great or the quality might not be as great.

I'm really not all that knowledgeable about hardware at all. You said I could use a new motherboard, could you link one that would be better? Or a better CPU?

And will all this fit in the case?

if any part of your build has personal functionality such as the case, then don't change the build. it will prove more beneficial to you the motherboard will fit in your case. very few cases have fitment problems. the antec case is definitely worth the buy if you need it.

here are two other motherboard options.
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...MP=OTC-Froogle
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...YTE-_-13128059

memory (just giving one example here, there are tons of memory deals going on)
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16820227124

power supply (yours is ridiculously expensive and i still think a 500-600 watt is good but here are two options)
http://www.zipzoomfly.com/jsp/Produc...tCode=10005494
for more power...700w OCZ
http://clubit.com/product_detail.cfm...mp=AFC-CJ_CBIT

8600GT will do the job. although i would personally recommend an 8800GT or 9600GT. However, the cards are double than what the 8600 would cost you.

I would not buy the e6750 cpu as the e8400 is nearly the same price (20-30 bucks more). if anything get an 8400, but like i said check Frys as they are discounting heavily on older stock processors.
Microcenter had these for 180, i'm not sure if the promotion is still running. You can even run the
E3130 which is essentially the 8400 server cpu.

^^Ok cool.

Now I heard that the 8600 only takes up one slot (whatever it's called) and the 8800 takes up 2. Will those motherboard house an 8800/9600? And could you link a few good cards of those?

people always say it takes up two slots but it doesn't slide into two slots, the card has a nice fan on it which extends far out. so, when you insert this into the slot it will hover over another pci slot thus it takes up two slots. the motherboard will be able to fit the 8800/9600

tjhe 9600 is more at an entry level pricing than the 8800gt. I would definitely get the 9600 over the 8600. that being said.. here are some links

http://www.clubit.com/product_detail...mp=AFC-CJ_CBIT
http://www.zipzoomfly.com/jsp/Produc...tCode=10007134

oh one last thing.. all links i have posted are from legit vendors.

Alright, so then I'll probably go for the 9600, that's a great price on that!

A few more questions.

I will be taking the hard drive from my old Gateway and installing it on this one. So I'll have 2 hard drives.

What cables will I need for it all? Like I said, I don't think the cables are included with anything. And where can I get them all? I didn't see anything on Newegg...

you're old hard drive is probably an IDE drive (now a lot refere to it as PATA - parallel). Your new seagate drive is SATA - serial. Both will work in conjunction. You'll need one IDE cable for your old drive. The new drive will come with SATA cables (usually red). Make sure you set both drive jumpers appropriately on both the SATA (some SATA drives have jumpers that limit your data transfer rate) and your PATA drive that should have a jumper set to cable select or master. Typically, there is a diagram on your drives that show you such.

IDE Cable - only a couple dollars

My fax, I have the 8600 and 8800 and I would definitely say get the 8800.

Other than that, I'd say just get a second 250 GB harddrive. You'll be surprised how fast these fill up, especially if you download torrents.

^^Right on, I appreciate the replies everybody.

I think for now I'm gonna stick with just one hard drive. The current one I'm using is only 80gb, and it's not even 1/4 of the way full yet. And the old gateway one will be suffice enough for all my music/pictures.

Now, I do need to get an ethernet card for my internet. That will fit with the graphics card, right? Anybody have a suggestion for which one I should get.

Have any suggestions on power supplies from newegg? CPUs?

I'm really trying to get everything from newegg, that way it will all come at once, plus it will save me shipping costs.

edit: Another MAIN thing I'm looking for is quiet. I want everything to be as quiet as possible.

Also I think I read somewhere that the basic version of Vista is only compatable with 4gb ram, and in order for it to recognize 8gb you have to upgrade to Ultimate.

Is that true?

If so, what is good ram I should get that would be compatible with the motherboard?? 2 x (4gb (2gb x 2)).

edit once again: Sorry about all the questions, but I want to do things right this time around. Just reading up on all the reviews on the products here, and most are saying this "This is an OEM package. Does NOT include ANY cables or screws."

Which is why I asked about the cables. Once I get everything set up the way I want it, I'll post the wishlist and you guys can tell me what else I'm gonna need to complete the build.

I appreciate it.

I would recommend using windows XP. its a lot better for gaming right now. Vista is just in its early stages and its not developed enough. I have a dual boot with xp and vista, and I mainly use vista for the media center (I have ultimate). other than that its nothing much more than a resource hog. It looks like you've picked out a pretty decent machine, but even good machines wont run games in DX10 very well. If you're not willing to shell out over $5000 on a computer then I would just stick with XP.

I'd also recommend spending less on the PSU, you're not going to need 750W right now, its pretty future proof don't get me wrong, but you could spend more money on a part that makes a bigger performance difference.

oh and I just got 2 8800GT's today. they were a great deal. $216 each at newegg with a $30 rebate. Im running them right now. I was disappointed with my 7950GX2, it wouldnt run anything very well. but 8800GT's in sli has been incredible so far.

XP it is then. That will recognize 8gb right? I thought I had a reason for going with Vista, maybe it was just cause it's the newest OS and just keeping up with the times. But I'm running Vista now, and yes, it is a resource hog.

Can you recommend a better power supply if 750w is too much?

no need for 8gb of memory. xp will not detect above 4gb. x64 edition of the operating system will. 4gb is more than enough memory even for vista. Although i would personally run a bit more if i was doing what i did now on vista.

myfax check my power supply links above. good power supplies and good price. i'm running the cooler master on my OC E6300.
