Re: Imagine for a moment...

Well the TRUE rules of physics aren't something we are necessarily aware of and really all we can know is our understanding of them. Your speaking of universals that seem to exist insofar as our we determine them to from our perceptions. Can we even know that their are any such thing as true rules of physic. Could they not be changing and even contradicting themselves?

I agree that language makes things difficult. It is how we assign any meaning to a thing and how we relate any meaning to it. Language is intrinsically metaphysical, it demands that we believe in universals to even engage in it. I think there was one school of greek thought that refused to speak in an attempt to escape metaphysics they would point at things... may also have been a joke.

Even our transmission of ideas is coloured by our historical circumstances and because we have all these limits it is difficult to formulate an argument in favour of having TRUE knowledge.

I believe he's referring to two opposite parts making a whole. Similar to the concept of Yin-Yang.

Maybe you watch National Geographic, maybe you don't. But I think NG is one of the best channels on TV. Now you may or may not have seen the documentary of the single lioness that had been cast out from her pride.

During her time alone she comes across a baby antelope who had also been abandoned.

Now this lion had several choices, the lion could kill and eat the antelope, it could even just leave it alone. But the lion actually adopted the baby antelope.

They followed each other each day even to the point where they slept side by side.

The lion treated the antelope exactly how a mother lioness would treat a cub.

Now perhaps this was only a mistake of identity and the lion thought the antelope was a cub, but I think we all know a lion can tell the difference...

In the end the baby antelope was killed and eaten by a larger male lion while the lioness tried desperately to save it...

Now what part of adopting an antelope helps promote the survival of the lion?
If the lion (and all life as you say) was designed only to protect itself, well than what benefit would it have from adopting an antelope?

Love is not just a mistake of evolution...

I don't get that channel or else I would watch it. I do hit up Animal Planet from time to time though.

Obviously survival isn't the only instinct animals possess. Motherly instincts are also pretty strong in females plus a lion cast out from a pride is going to be lonely. From the perspective of a human, it makes sense for two abandoned animals to bond, though I don't know enough about animals to say that's the reason the lion did what she did.
