For example mammaliformes ("almost mammals") and then mammals existed throughout the reign of the dinosaurs, but could not compete for the large terrestrial vertebrate niches which dinosaurs monopolized. The end-Cretaceous mass extinction removed the non-avian dinosaurs and made it possible for mammals to expand into the large terrestrial vertebrate niches.

Time ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? you can say it doesn't matter but, we pretty much revolve around what hand the clock fallls on. It started when all known history was recorded. We, the human race have a facination with keeping track of ourselves and we continue to to make sure we do a better job at it. Keeping our history recorded for the future is a good thing but with what technolgy what it is today we could esentialy eliminate any recordings of our history and not even realize we did so. Kinda make the egyptians writing on rock walls look like genusues.
