it's a shame we don't put more funding into space research.

i wonder if there's water on it, or better yet the possibility of life.

i also want to learn more about voltan, that planet that spock is from.

I agree 100%

Future generations will suffer becuase of our lack of funding for the space program today. It is going to take years and years and years and years for us to be ready to send people to another planet to study it....it should be a top world priority, not just within the United States.

Instead we are blowing all of our money on fighting eachother, rather than trying to save eachother....how sad.

Me too! Of course, we eventually have to get out of our solar system, and if the newly discovered planet does indeed have water on it, then that is really good news.

At the pace we're going now, we'll be lucky to set foot on Mars within the century

I know, it is disgusting really. We are moving at a snails pace, and we do not have to! It is frustrating.

Why space? Why not explore the ocean? There's tons of room down there, plus we should go down there anyways to see what's down there.

Why do we have to explore the depths of the ocean before we go into space? I imagine the potential gains in successful inter-stellar space travel far outweigh those that can be found in the depths of the ocean.

Do you know how difficult that would be? and not for the usual reasons...but for the reason on the size of dust particles alone. The dust particles on the planet are so small, they can defect any of our technology that we have even today.....there are A LOT of reasons why colonizing mars would be near impossible. Its close to possible, but very impossible.

Actually, leaving the solar system would be something almost impossible to do, with the technology we have now its deffinately impossible, and the technology that we can see ourselves having in the near future...its still pretty damn impossible. Actually, leaving the solar system i believe depends on technology that we dont even believe is possible yet.......i could be wrong, but i think im right.

And its deffinately good news....but not really for us. Because, that planet is sooooooo far away...that even sending a beam of light to it, just to send it some information...is going to take 20 years. to send something, and recieve something back....would take 40+ years. and thats at the speed of light. The only thing WE really gain from this planet being there is possible interaction....and just knowing that there are indeed other earth planets in the universe. Which should make the our world want to invest in space research a bit more...you would think. But, I think we are still to caught up in wars and money to care about life...and the future of mankind.

FUCK the ocean. FUCK the bottom of the sea. You've actually just tickled my BIGGEST fear ever. Like, there is nothing more scary to me than a large body of water. I have a reoccuring nightmare, where Im falling out of the sky for about 5 goddamn minutes, knowing full well the sight im going to see, then i look down, and there is nothing but ocean as far as the eye can see, in every direction....however, its nighttime....and then i fall into the water....i cant even describe to you the amount of petrification that consumes me during this experience....i KNOW there are sharks and whales and what the fuck else is under the water all around me....and i wake up, after however long my mind wants to torture me under the water......

thing is, in my dream...I know that its not earth. it is deffinately a Water World of some sort......

oh but yeah, the bottom of our oceans probably have some wicked shit down there....but thats why I dont think we should go down there. I mean, we could be dealing with dinasaur type things.....i mean, what if we disturbed a fish like whale thing, that decided to come up to the top and start walking the land? and kill us all...haha. how ironic would that be.

can someone say godzilla.

I think you might be a bit confused. Interstellar space travel, as of right now, is completely useless. unless for scientific research purposes. There is not one thing in space close enough to this planet for us to venture further. and anything that is close enough, which is basically anything in our own solar system, can be researched with satalites. Everything is to far away, its impossible to travel further than even mars, because of fuel purposes and such. but I think the image you have in your head is we take a guy, put him on a ship, and send him to other planets in other solar systems....which is just impossible.

We would benefit more from oceanic studies because, well, were running out of space to house people on ground, pretty soon we might be having to make our own atlantis' just to have room to fit everyone.

Anybody hear of the web like space station thing they are thinking about making...around the planet? it has to do with the space elevator idea they have...and then having a web like ball surrounding the planet....it would house another 6 billion people or something. This to me sounds like it would effect tempuratures on earth...and such things.

And when did I advise jumping on the shuttle and sending it out past Pluto?

Actually, you might be the one who is confused. You presume a time period on my statements, the time period of this instant. Never did I say that. It is not impossible to travel further than Mars due to fuel. Ever heard of a Solar Sail? That is not exactly Sci-Fi, and could do a lot in aiding us in exploring the solar system. Although I appreciate you peering into my head to uncover my deepest most thoughts, you're way off. Way, way, way off.

Tell me, given our level of technology how are we to build an underwater city? Why even do that, when we could (probably) more easily build one on top of the water? What about the pressure in the depths of the oceans, are we close to solving this problem? You're also assuming we are running out of space to house people on land, which is not so. There are many things we could do on land to house more people, build up or down for instance. I believe we are going to have a human presence on another body in our solar system long before we build an underwater city.

I have not heard of that. Do you have any links because it sounds interesting?
