a really odd question

ok well i suffered from a really really bad drought of depression probley 8 months..and when i smell certain smells or when i listen to certain song like jimi hendrixs- a merman i should turn to be 1983..its like it triggers old censors and i have this really odd overwhelming feeling about how i was then and how i am now..and its just very like i said odd..it could be anything from a smell or like i said music..expiscially music..the only thing that kept my sanity was music and weed and various drugs that i resorted too in my so called healing process..so do i have that right or can anyone find something out about that?

sounds like ur kinda having deja-vu. Your smelling or hearing these things that are reminding you or bringing back old memories from when things werent going so good and u become uneasy.. i dunno thats complex man lol.

yeah, derail those associative nueropathways that aren't serving you well. you reccognise that which does not serve you well, and all it takes is the next step, which you appear to be already taking, to break the associations that do not serve you well.

that make sence?

this is common in people that suffer intense emotion/sensual stimulation. often times when they sense something, be it smell, taste, see, hear, or touch, certain things, it reminds them, or makes them have a flashback, persay. people that come home from war often will avoid certain places or situations due to the fact of the post traumatic stress disorder. this is not that circumstance, but it is similar. i may be wrong with this, but it seems you went through something very sensually stimulating that had adverse affects on you, and when you are introduced to certain stimulae it results in a recurrance of those times, like deja-vu except deja-vu is a sense where you've been somewhere before and know whats going to happen, etc. just some thought hope it helps

It's called 'anchoring' in NLP, but it's been known about for years elsewhere too. You can anchor any emotion or memory to sound, touch, anything at all and trigger them sometimes years later. They tend to take on a life of their own and negative anchors in particular can get stronger when you're depressed. The way to get around them is to break the old anchors and replace them with new ones, which means getting a positive memory and associating that with what you're seeing as negative at present. I believe Rasta Man may know something about this, I'm not sure.

from the sounds of it, i know EXACTLY what your saying. about a year after i broke up with my first girlfriend, i noticed that with every smell and sound, id soon be feeling and thinking everything that i was a year before. it was bitter sweet. when id hear play certain music, i could either rejoice or cry depending on the situation. the autumn air itself brought up past experiences. it wasnt so much de ja vu so much as it was pure nostalgia triggered by the slightest sense.

i've never really had an intense emotional experience, or at least not anything out of the ordinary. i believe i experience the same thing your are. however my memories about it are not always bad, sometimes i remember a good time in life. i've always called it nostalgia, but that does seem as strong a word needed to describe the experience.
