What Scares the Scarers?
What scares the scarers?
In the last few years the UK and many other countries have seen civil liberites being eroded, with an increased presence of surveillance of all kinds, increased powers of access without warrant, blah blah...We're being led to a place where for instance, we can no longer protest en masse in the way we used to and can be prevented from gathering in groups of no more than three in the streets if the government enacts its powers when it chooses. The way they have us bound perhaps points to the idea that there will come a time in the near future when the government feels it will have a need to regulate our existences and control us to an extent far beyond what we can imagine now, right down to human tagging and more.
But it all begs the question, why? What could be coming that will need them to wield such powers?
Forget the 'war on terrorism' as a reason for putting it all in place. This took hold really I suppose here in the UK in the 1980's. Changes recently though have been much more rapid, even before the middle eastern problems things were turning odd. What is coming? Is it of their making, or ours? Is it just easier to run a fully documented society where anyone can be pinpointed at any moment, anwhere in the world?
To me, they fear us. They fear the fact that we do have easy access to each other and can share information and knowledge. We're harder to fool, harder to blind to the truth behind world events. And we have the power to make them as transparent to us as they would like us to be to them, through simple things like us talking and sharing ideas in a GC forum. Knowledge IS power.
The question is, why the controls? What do you think is behind it all? Anything or nothing?
Discuss.
