Talking Plants wont flower with propane heater

I have a 12 x 8 shed that is insulated. I put tyvek house wrap on the ceiling and walls. There is plastic on the floor. I was using a Heat Daddy to heat it when the light is off (durring the day). Last winter my plants wouldnt flower. I thought that my seeds were too old but I had a good crop in the summer. Is it the carbon minoxide or the red glow from the flame? The flame isnt bright enough to see anything in the grow room but the heater. Its not the heat. The exhaust fan in on high regulating the temperature. The heater sits on the floor under a fan that blows on the plants. Fresh air is also fentilated to the fan area.

I tried the propane heater this winter again with the same results. Plants grow but dont flower. Not even the males (im still using seeds).

I also have a scale problem. I have it controled with a fogger that I got at the grow store but there is no completely killing them. I control mites with some expencive stuff just made for mites. I have had problems with pests in the past but growing in the shed instead of the house seems harder.

Has anyone else had simular problems?

If they're not flowering, they're not getting enough dark time. The glow from the heater must be prohibiting the plants from getting total darkness.

Re: Plants wont flower with propane heater

Hello,

this is actually something I'm wondering about too. The room gets way too cold this time of year when the lights off (and getting colder every day in the northeast) for the 12 hours. Most heaters emit an orange glow which I'm figuring will effect the flowering.

How do you guys deal with or do you have any recommendations?

No problem. Another benefit with a ceramic heater is that it is way safer than an old school coil heater.

Re: Plants wont flower with propane heater

so tell me more about this totall darkness...cause when plants are outside there are certain times of the month when the moon reflects the sun rays in the dead of the night and they still bud............how is this different from having the amber of a light source affecting budding?

I've always wounder that myself. I actually had a post on one of the growing threads here asking whether supplementing light with the moon cycles would be beneficial/higher yielding, or if this would have an effect; positive or negative. I was told the moon light is to dim to effect anything. That seems to contradict the information on this post. The only thing I could think is the difference in the spectrum being put out, but I don't know. If anyone could clear this up that would be awesome.

You need to keep the light below 1 lumen.

Re: Plants wont flower with propane heater

I turned the propane space heater around facing away from the plants and the plants are now flowering. Its still under the fan that blows on the plants and gives plenty of heat. I have a ceramic heater and a electric coil heater but I cant risk the high electricity usage. I also switched from 12 hours to 11 just for good measure. What a difference right away. They responded fast. Thanks for the tips everyone.
