Looking for advice

Okay, let me start off with, yes I know...we started it all wrong! We grew these truly on a lark, third times the charm ya know? We failed both previous attempts, and with old seeds, we didn't think the third would fly. But they did, and truly again, we didn't expect 17 of the twenty planted seeds to germinate...they were old.

But these babies are growing, and despite being utterly clueless, we are determined to do right by them...now...I've been perusing the boards, and the how-to threads, and we have fixed a lot of the things that were wrong. We now have a HPS lamp (boy! did they LOVE THAT!!) and have transplanted the smaller stunted plants into a separate container. We still have to keep them in two pots since they are indoors in a bathroom. We've added a timer to help with their lighting. But we've got a whole bunch of other problems, and I'd like advice on how to work with them.

First off, I think we have spider mites. Dark green upper leaves have yellow spots. The leaves are also darker green than I would have expected. We've got some leaf curling that I can't figure out because the light is far enough away. On one, (the really fuzzy pic) the leaf is half wilted, and turning kind of brown.

I'd be eternally grateful for any genuine advice.

Thank you!

Okay...I did some more homework, and drained the catch container from the plants whose leaves were curling under. It was very full and very yellow. Also wondering if the spots I mentioned may be magnesium deficiency?

Probably the best way to check that would be to check the pH. Anyone have recommendations for a tester?

Your problems

Please make sure you have good drainage and air can come up through the bottom of the grow pot.

One plant per grow pot once you know you have females.

Also I usllay fill my soil grow pots with potting soil all the way to the top(less 1 inch).

Watering: I water as much as I want making sure with proper drainage any excess watering flows out the bottom.

Also make sure your water is pur with no chemicals in it.

If you have a concern on this let your water stand in an open plastuc bucket for a week to let most of then chemicals in to disapate.
Also..Little trick.

If you can take your standing water and run air though it with a pump like you would add to a fish tank. Use the same stones that you would for a fish tank.
This will help clean up the water as well as add O2 to the water the plants will love it.

Overwatering is bad because the plants don't like wet feet but if your watering in relatonship to the amount of soil you have and are not making MUD you should do fine.

The plants will generlly fight off anything that attacks them unless you create fungus or are attacked by some plant eatting rascal.

Talking

Hey! Thanks for the speedy reply. The pots are properly draining, filled with lots of top quality potting soil. They are the kind that have the catch trays underneath that hold excess water. We apparently have been overwatering, and that tray was full. They have lots of ventilation.

When are they too old to transplant?

I think we may have found the problem. The pH of the soil is averaging around 5, so it looks like the soil is too acidic. From what I've read online, it looks like I need to add calcium to neutralize it so the plants can absorb the nutrients there. I read that soaking eggshells is one way to do this. I'm going to keep looking, but if anyone has any better recommendations, please let me know!

Soil

Make sure your potting soil isn't too good.
Some of them come with fertilizer in them which tends to burn the plants.

I would suggest you also stay away from miracle grow, seems to have too much of everything in it.

Snip off the damaged leafs and the plant will compensate for any damage done. Talk to your plants and give them positive reinforcement rather then yelling at them to gorw faster, taller etc...grin

Cool Woooohooooo

Hey Mow2! The soil was good, but it wasn't miracle gro...neither is the fert. The we added lime to the soil of the one with the yellow spots and it seems to be making a come back, the spots aren't as vivid. Cool

So now, it looks like they are starting to bud...confused the shit out of me...we've had them on a long light cycle, and hadn't switched them to 12/12 yet...but they are looking like some girlies! I think we may have a male in there, but not sure since this is the first batch we've been able to germinate. I'll be perusing the forums to see what I can find, but thought it would be cool to post pics. I've got a kick ass camera with all the lenses, and I love looking at other folks pics, so I'll post some for others to look at.

HIGH All, welcome to The City Hope Springs.

The marks on your leaf doesn't look like marks THE borg would make, so fingers crossed it's not them.

Yes it could be magnesium deficiency...or a PH problem. Do you know what your PH is? What kind of fert you useing?

Just like you I too like to look at other growers grows..so put them pics up.

Your plants look great. I see nothing wrong. The auto flowering you are getting just seems to happen sometimes. I grew out some Nirvana Top44 once and had them sex themselves in veg stage. Its a genetic thing that you just cant control so dont get upset about it...lol. Personally, I dont like a plant or strain that does this and I certainly didnt like the 44's. Pretty plants but the potency sucked big time. In my book they were a total waste of three months. I'd be looking for another strain that does not do that. If you plan on maintaining a mother plant it cant be done with a strain like that. They just go into flowering on you and continue in their cycle whether you want them to or not...lol. tc gm714

a lot of nirvana's strains auto flower, i think they use rudialis in the breeding to get the flowering times down and it can mess up a otherwise good plant.

Cool

Hi everyone. :-)

unoit: the pH was 5.5 before we added the lime. too low, too acidic. we raised it to 6.5, within a good range of the nutes now. we are using a general water soluble general purpose 20-20-20 I'll post some new pics as soon as I take them! The pretty babies are growing so tall! One is past my shoulder now! We keep raising the HPS light so it doesn't scorch her (she's definitely a sweet girlie)

The one that had the yellow marks popped balls out, so it's a moot point now. he's currently upside down drying. I think it was mag deficiency as the spots faded after we adjusted the pH.

gm714: Thanks for the compliments! Not bad considering this is our third attempt. We literally botched the first two, and some of these plants were so stunted because we had them in such crappy light! They're all exploding since we got the HPS. The seeds we have are ones that came in stuff we bought, not bad considering some of the seeds were a year old. it wasn't the greatest pot in the world, but it did the job. I'm not really even sure what type these are, and haven't figured out how to identify them. All I know is they smell DAMN good!! Which of course brings me to my next line of thought...which kind of coincides with Wylde's comments:

how do i get GOOD seeds in the states without getting my ass busted big time? I was reading someplace that some places will put the seeds in pens for shipping, but I am nervous about buying seeds from places on the internet without some kind of verification they're legit. Don't know anyone in Canada or elsewhere that I'd trust to send them to me.
