Tips....yellow and now turning brown...what gives?

I'm not sure if this is a K deficiency or not.

Basically I've got this from what I can tell, happening to nearly all of my plants, some worse than others...after my bro almost killed my entire crop when I was outta town for 3 days (by only giving them straight up water, no nutes) I revived all my babies in the freaking nick of time.

Now I'm only having this issue:

The tips of the leaves are turning yellow and then after a day or two, are now turning brown, as seen from the attached photo.

I'm using Fertimilome Ultimate Potting Mix(Link) for soil and Fox Farm Nutes. I have all of them, but have only been using the Grow Big and was using the initial stuff, Big Plant Food or whatever it's called. I'm about to switch these babies to 12/12 but want to get this resolved before I do that.

bump...now the leaves on that plant in the photo have turned a dark green...not sure wtf is going on...

oh and I should mention the leaves are also turning down...

I pH check my water AFTER I put in my nutes, and always shoot for approx. 6.5 - 7.0

Heh, I've got the same soil at the moment...don't hear much about it 'round these boards though.

Anyway, how old are they?

Definitely resembles a K deficiency...Grow Big should help with that though...whens the last time you fed? How frequently?

It still could also be a Ph issue...Have you checked the runoff Ph? Check that, then try to adjust it over a couple of waterings if it is way off (increase/decrease the Ph of water going in, then balance both Ph results over time).

Darker green leaves usually means an N toxicity...

Next watering, use only clean water and then check the runoff Ph...if its off, try to correct it/flush...if it's okay, I guess give it some more GrowBig to counteract the K def. Bear in mind that nutes can bring down the soils Ph...so if you feed it very often, you might need to flush anyway to balance the soils Ph.

Dunno if you've got this link, but check it out...it's got good info on correcting all problems...

Your bro could've screwed up all the Ph levels if he didn't check them...clean water can have an unbalanced Ph, too, so that needs to be tested everytime just like water w/nutes

thanks for the reply man...I've got my Jorge Cervantes Bible here, and from looking at it and reading, I'm pretty sure that it's a K Deficiency...

Well, I germinated the seeds on 9.23, and by 9.28 I had them in soil and they were growing their 1st sets of leaves...so they're approx. 4 weeks old atm...planning on switching to 12/12 this week/weekend....

since this isn't my first grow, and I'm not overly eager to water them daily which I know some people struggle with, I do the old 2" down in the soil finger test every day....if it's dry I water, if wet, it waits another day. I alternate my feeding....feed one water, use plain water the next.

I just watered them today with just regular pH balanced tap water. I think to be safe, tonight I'm going to flush the worst plant, check the pH and figure out wtf is going on. I'll probably end up flushing all of them and apply a 1/2 amount of Grow Big nutes to them to give them something after the flushing.. thoughts?

Good call on flushing one of them early, I think, especially to check the Ph...
If you don't really feel like flushing you could just give 'em enough water so some drips out the bottom..that way you can check the runoff Ph and you most likely won't overwater them (not that flushing would, it's just that flushing is a bitch to do

)

Have you been giving them full doses of the GrowBig? I might suggest giving only 1/4 dose just to minimize the chances of nute burn...I'm not sure how "hot" GrowBig is though, I've never had the chance to use it.

Don't give nutes if the runoff Ph is off...wait til the Ph is a bit more balanced to give nutes.

I only have the cheap water pH checker, just purchased a digital Hanna Instruments one...would have gotten it today from the local Hydro shop, but shit heads run it, and are overpriced and never have anything...they didn't even have soil...hence why i'm using the stuff that I am....

Maybe the shop is strictly hydro, thus they had no soil....but still, wtf?

Is your tester the chemical droplets or paper strips?

they had 1 old ass bag of happy frog or w/e its called from Fox Farm...the guy who owns it runs it as 2nd business and doesn't give a shit about it from what I gathered....his own employee said they suck...he even had ppl order LED lights through him and 6 months later, have yet to receive them....their shop was pathetic....and unfortunately it's the only one.

they're the chemical droplets btw...

Damn, that sucks...Happy Frog is still a good soil, but if it's old n shit...whatever. Too bad it's the only one. Looks like the internet is the way to go here

I use the chemical drops, and they work well enough...next best thing compared to the hanna you're about to get.

Best of luck...I'll be checkin in to see how everything turns out.

well I just checked the run off from the soil...the water going in was approx. 6.5...the water coming out...was like 5 (if the color was truly orange from the drops.i don't think it was red, but all of the dirt in the water made it difficult to read a bit)........so it's way too acidic....so locking out the nutes big time...i guess I'll make the pH approx. 8? or what should it be to correct it?

I'd suggest using 7.0 or 7.5 Ph water if you go that route, and working your way down gradually from there. It'll take a while...just monitor every watering.

There are some things you can add to the soil to adjust Ph a bit quicker...check that link I gave you above...about 3/4 down the page they list products that affect soil Ph, it's in bold print so should be easy-ish to find it there. Only issue there is you never know how much to add to adjust the Ph correctly..

Getting some PhUp and PhDown product, used to adjust waters Ph, can help...just add some to your water and it should transfer a bit over to the soil, thus adjusting the Ph.

Search the forums for some more ideas, I'm sure other people have some better ones.

Thanks...yeah, I got the phUp and phDown already from my last grow....I just leeched the soil....that was one hell of an experience....I managed to get the ph to I believe 6.0, so it should help a lot...I forgot what a royal pain it is to leech the soil...especially since these are 5 gallon grow bags which means I gotta do 15 gallons of water...ugh...the friggin grow bag fell over during the process...thank god I had it in the bath tub...lol...AND that I had extra soil to fill it back up.

Anyways, I'll let you know how it progresses....when do you think I should water the plant again? 4-5 days? Or wait until I do the 2" down check?

I'd wait until after the finger test...that way you can definitely see if there is any improvement at all.

Problem solved...got that dolomite lime...had it at Home Depot even, these little pellets. Put like 3-5 Tbsp. as directed...fixed everything. Also purchased a digital pH Checker...1000% times easier with that shit..

You have a Magnesium deficiency. I noticed in the picture one leaf in the back with the brown tip curled upward. Dead give away that the plant is pulling existing mag from the leaves through a osmosis leaving behind the curled upward dead tissue.

A K def would start spotting first then start yellowing then leaves would start necrosis (dead spots).

Pick up a Cal/mag formula from your local hydro shop and feed lightly (1 teaspoon per gal light feeding / 2 teaspoon per gal heavy feeding).

Epson salt also works but lacks the calcium needed to help balance the pH. Epson salt is available at any drug/grocery store. 1 tablespoon per gal every other feeding. Dissolve epson salt in 1 qt boiling water first and let cool.
