Little gnat looking fly things (the kind that eat veg material)

So I check on my room this morning and I see some of these little flies dancing around the dirt of my 3 young vegging mothers. I took the 3 pots outside and killed all the gnats I could find. It looks like they are coming up out of the soil. It is organic (supposedly sterilized) miracle grow stuff. I'm guessing they came with the soil.

The oldest plant is 3 weeks and about 1 foot tall. The other two are seedlings about a week old with rock wool cubes burried in soil.

Can I just transplant all 3 to new (pest free) soil and be done? The 2 young are fem freebie seeds from dinafem. The oldest is a bagseed plant.

Thanks

Re: Little gnat looking fly things (the kind that eat veg material)

If you already have them transplanting won't really help. First if your growing them indoors keep them there. Moving plants inside to the outdoors and then back inside again is a good way to get pests in the first place.

If you have gnats you need to get some of those sticky fly traps and some diatomaceous earth. Cover the soil with the d. earth and the bottom of the holes on the pots. This will kill them as they try to burrow/emerge into the soil. Don't water a lot since gnats like a moist environment. Also pests find it hard to live in an environment constantly bombarded by air currents.

Re: Little gnat looking fly things (the kind that eat veg material)

The 2 babies have never been outside, nor has the soil in those 2 pots. All the flies seemed to hatch at the same time last night (I've had this soil for a week) so it kinda seems like they came with the soil to me.

I put all three pots outside and put 3 mothballs on the top of the soil of each plant.

those are fungus gnats. They are harmless except to plants in the early early stage of root development. To get rid of them, water less often.

Re: Little gnat looking fly things (the kind that eat veg material)

Thanks for the advice. I segregated the 3 plants for now. I have a fan blowing pretty hard on all 3 and they're under a CFL / LED combo homebrew fixture (about 61 watts total).

I'm hoping the constant wind will dry them out fast to kill off the gnats.
