Ballast isnt working after I put in a metal halide!

I started some seeds about a week ago, and now im having all kinds of light troubles. first my 4 flouro tubes went out so I moved them under a few CFLs, I just went out and bought a 1000 watt metal halide because supposedly my system can accept both. however I just moved them under the new metal halide and the light only stayed on for about 10 seconds. it took a while to brighten up and when it finally got bright it turned off and my ballast started making a loud whirring or humming. now the light isn't turning on and the seedlings are back under the CFLs.

does anyone have any helpful input? thanks

Was the ballast the same wattage as the bulb? Even if it was, my guess is that it wasn't intended for MH, and the ignitor (needed for HPS, but not for MH) spiked the bulb.

What is the model# and manufacturer of the ballast? Or, can you confirm that somewhere on the packaging it specifically states that it accepts both kinds?

Yeah I looked on the box that it came in and it specifically stated that it accepts 600 and 1000 watt MH and HPS, and I got a 1000 watt MH and whenever I plug it in it runs for a minuet or two while getting brighter but when it gets where it is supposed to be it dies.
