Mold on Soil

I am growing inside a PC. There is soil inside a rubbermaid container for each plant. Both plants have a white mold growing in their soil. What causes this?

Could it be a unsterile medium?
Over watering possibly?
Light leaking through the sides of the container?
Please help me....

I transplanted into a new pot for each plant with fresh soil. It was the same soil but looked good. I do not want this to come back for the health of my girls.

I'am not a dirt guy but i have read a layer of sand on top will stop the light from reaching the soil but allows perfect drainage. Is your ventilation good?
