broken intitial root

A friend of mine recently germinated a seed and had completely shed its shell when the initial root broke about 3/4 of the way, it was completely severed but there is still about a half inch of root remaining is all hope lost?

I have done this with garden vegie plants before on accident. It will most likely survive, but, it wil be stunted, and never really catch up to its piers. IME they never produce as much or get as large as non injured plants.
