Damn, rust spots...

Soil

FF Ocean Forest

Indoors

Bagseed

15 days old

400w MH cooled

12" from light (not burned, temps 72-80F)

Never been fed nutes just water and super thrive, seedling...

Runoff pH is 6.0

72-80F and 30-40RH

Newly transplanted into 2.5 gallon from 5" starting pot (same bag of FFOF)

I looked close for bugs and didn't see any/can't tell

I transplanted yesterday, no lost soil, fresh soil from bag into washed 2.5 gallon new pot. No other stresses throughout its life so far. I've only watered with distilled water with super thrive and pH up to get pH of water back to 7.0... I watered before and after transplant with plain distilled water, no Super Thrive or pH up.

Two other plants have been growing in the same area with about a 2 week head start. They have shown signs of bugs eating leaves (holes/shriveling). I hung a Hot Shot strip behind my fan that blows on the plants last Friday and the eating seems to have stopped on the other plants. However, today, I noticed a couple of light brown dots on a couple of leaves on my other plants and I brushed some off and looked VERY close, but over about an hour, the other dots have not moved...

I'm concerned I have a spider mite problem, but the leaves on this seedling are very different damage from what the other two plants had (rust spots vs. eating/shriveling.)

Please let me know what it could be and the next step to keep my plants safe.

Re: Damn, rust spots...

Looking great! just the first signs of over nute. I would say repot with less nutes.

Re: Damn, rust spots...

No nutes... just water.

FFOF has the only nutes this baby's ever seen...

+rep for the quick response though!

Your runoff pH of 6.0 is a little low. See if you can get it to around 6.5 but 6.2-6.8 should suffice. Second the spots you see might be slight fert burn from the soil. No biggy though because they look fine.

Re: Damn, rust spots...

My two Bubblelicious girls are showing similar signs of damage... I also fought off a red spider mite infestation while they were seedlings with a Hot Shot no-pest strip2. Also using FFOF soil (don't have a pH tester atm)... I noticed that only the plants that had spider mites were developing these spots, which makes me think this is from them feeding on the leaves, or possibly from laying eggs on the underside, weakening the leaf in only those spots. I was also thinking it is some type of mold, but i believe it would have spread to the other plants (before i pulled males). I kept one male for seed production, and it still hasn't shown any signs of this problem. They are about 8 weeks into veg now, and the new growth doesn't have this issue. With the spider mites permanently gone, i think I'm in the clear, but I would like to know for sure what is plaguing my lower leaves? Here's a pic of the devastation...
Peace

Those red spyder mites are a bitch to get rid of, we tried for six months last season to get rid of them, kep't coming back. The best shit I tried was neem oil every 3 days for 2 weeks and that did the best. But still after the season cleared the room, bleached the room, waited 2 weeks, bleached again and waited another month before I started fresh.

Re: Damn, rust spots...

I've determined VTEC was right, it was low pH. I watered with 8.0 water and the small leaves have completely covered up the leaves with the rust spots and no signs of any other problems... thank God! Spider mites suck ass from everything I've read... still keeping an eye out on the other plants for any eating.

I also tried numerous remedies to try and rid my grow room of those little bastards, but everything I tried was just a temporary solution... They kept coming back, most of the time within 24 hours of initial application. After almost 2 months, I read somewhere about the "Hot Shot No-Pest Strip2" and how it is supposed to fix the problem for good. I was extremely skeptical, but figured that $7 was worth it since I had already spent over $100 on the problem. Low and behold, just over 12 hours after I put one of those in the grow room, I haven't seen a single spider mite since then!!! They work beautifully, and last for 3-4 months, per strip. Very effective and plant-safe, also. Just an idea in case you ever have a relapse.

I wonder if the rust-colored spots are some other type of disease transmitted by the spider mites, which doesn't show up for a few weeks? I am still not seeing any signs that the damage is spreading, which is good, but I will keep a close eye on them to make sure it stays that way. Happy growing everyone!!!
Peace
