Hello everyone,

I recently began my first indoor grow with the help of Highgrade Seed companies, Purple Diesel (NYC diesel X Purple Oregon Thai). I began germination of 10 seeds, over the course of 3-4 days they all successfully cracked, but potted separately depending on which ones were ready. They were in batches of 3, then 4, then 3. First batch sprouted out of the dirt 03/20, second 03/21, and third 03/22. Surprisingly, the second batch is growing most vigorously, but they seem quite discolored, burnt appearing (no, no nutrients at all), and very slow. the cotyledon leaves began turning yellow from a nice lush green, and quite frankly doing have as much spunk as I had hoped for after a week from sprout.

I only water when they seem very, very dried out, and usually give them a nice soak when i do so. I keep them in plastic bins and pour some water on the bottom to absorb in from underneath as well. Lights are kept a few inches above at what I feel is close but not too close. Desk size oscillating fan inside blowing on them to keep it cool.

I feel like these should be quite ideal conditions for them to grow, but only have two that are looking quite healthy, but some have had problems with the seed shell staying on too long and effecting cotyledon growth, also what appeared as a "siamese" twins, when germinated had 2 separate root tips, then sprouted into 2 plants, and the smaller one is doing much healthier surprisingly! After viewing other diaries most were a bit bigger than mine are after a week, but the least they have are true leaves just developing.

Are these plants growing too slow? What are the causes of this discoloration and yellowing? How can I fix this?? I have pictures I just cant figure out how to post them up so you all can evaluate, can someone let me know how that goes also?

Thanks for anyone who can lend a brother some help...Purple Diesel just sounds too good to pass up...

How old are they now?
What type of soil are they in?
Have they been fed?

Give them some time. The lack of color may be lack of nutients in the peat(not Sure) I don't like those peat pellets for germinating because they grow slower in them!!. Hope you didn't pay to much for those seedsZ(they sound good) for your first grow. My first grow was a screw up and learned alot on cheap seeds...no harm done lol Shithead

Don't let them get VERY dry. Dry is good. Very dry can kill off your root growth.

Next time I would use rockwool. I never had a bad seedling in rockwool. Also, it i kind of winter. Is it cold where you are? Make sure your not going down too cold at night, even for a few hours. They hate that. One thing I tried that gave me happiness one time was to put a foam sheet under my cutting/seedling tray. That stopped the cold getting at them.

Good luck!

The oldest seedlings have sprouted above the dirt 9 days ago (3/20) and youngest are 7 days ago (3/22).
They are in some standard seed starting soil by Jiffy (http://www.seedandgarden.com/shop/pr...-10-Quart.html)
Also by fed I assume with nutrients? I have yet to use any type of nutrient, just clean filtered tap water.

I don't think that my temps dip too low at night, that may be the case so ill do the foam move, but I was thinking they may be a bit too high for them on the contrary, the soil does dry out quite quickly, maybe humidity issues?

What worries me is the balance of the soil getting dry, then giving them a nice shower when they are, might be a mix of drying out and over watering is causing some shock? I'm in search of that perfect balance.

once i figure out how to post pictures they will be here. Thanks for the quick responses so far, but keep them coming!

Re: Slow growing seedlings - Purple Diesel

Going wet dry shouldn't be a problem as long as they don't get totally dry.

In fact, you need the oxygen, so it is good that they are getting it regularly. If they were standing in wet medium, that would slow root growth.

It sort of sounds like they were maybe dried out a bit too much. What happens there is that the tips of the roots shrivel up, and it can take a while for them to come back.

You have to look after the babies! Bad parents do not get rewarded with big bud. It is one of those things. I hated looking after clones. Always crying for attention.

Oh trust me I am a very very attentive parent! I have just had experience with overwater in the beginning stages and was afraid of doing it again so i think my problem was letting the soil get too dry. How often should I be watering them? is there a general rule of thumb or do I just go by how dry the soil is?

thanks for all your responses
