first hydro grow - stem problem

I am growing one Super Lemon Haze strain and one GigaBud strain in 5 gallon DWC buckets. The super lemon haze is doing really well and is growing much faster then i anticipated. The gigabud on the other hand started off well but is not growing anymore and some problems are forming at the base of the plant on the stem.

I started it from seed in 1" rockwool cubes. The stem of the gigabud is turning reddish brown in a 1/4" section of the stem right above the rockwool cube. The spot looks like it is strangling the stem because it has a much smaller diameter at the problem area. There is some white fuzzy or even crystal like stuff below the spot and even a little on the rockwool. Is this some fungus or mold choking out my gigabud?? should i be worried about it starting on the SLH?? I don't have pictures currently but will get some later today. the gigabud was a free seed so maybe it really doesn't have the greatest genetics. any help would be greatly appreciated

Also temps are usually about 82 F and humidity is at 30- 40 %. The rockwool cubes pretty much have never dried out. It is my first time doing hydro so..... another thing is the roots are starting to get little yellow bumps on both plants. is that normal??

Re: first hydro grow - stem problem

1st if your grow area is 3x3 or less you need to get your temps down just a little. I also have a gigabud in DWC and had the same problems. Without pics I'm guessing but the "fuzzy stuff" may be normal formation caused by dehydration. When this happens the the crystals from the water/nutes fall back to the media and collect on the stem also.

My stem also formed an area just above where it exited the media, this was caused from stress. The plant develops this to protect itself from trauma. If this is what is accureing then look for anything that may be causing the stem to move or sway or lean on the stem. Also know that if this is the problem it will cause no harm. In fact it makes the stem stronger. It will turn almost bark like and may even get very thin in some areas. As long as the leafs stays green leave the stem alone and let it do it's thing. But the plant also expends energy to do this and what we want is for the plant to use the energy to make buds. So ya do need to look and try to see if anything at is causing stress. If your doing the LST method then just cut a little on the angel of the bend.

Hope this helps if no then just file the info away for future grows.
Peace...

Re: first hydro grow - stem problem

that sounds like nute buildup....

are you using hardwater?
did you flush the rock wool cubes really good before you used them?

Re: first hydro grow - stem problem

i only did a little flush of the rockwool cubes. I am using hard wellwater since it is all i have available at this time. My nut solution is 2.5ml FloraMicro and 5ml Florabloom/gallon. I have taken pictures but i left the camera with the plants. I will post tomorrow.

i don't think anything has stressed it. It did fall over as a seedling but seemed to do fine as it picked itself up. it still doesn't seem to be growing really. Definetly not compared to my other.
