Problems With Leaves On First Grow UPDATE: Fertilizer?

A little bit under a month old, using a 660 W CFL, miracle grow soil, and tap water. From what I've read I'm guessing chlorine could be the problem, even though I'm letting the water I use to water the plants sit. The top leaves really took a turn down hill and the other leaves seem to be starting to discolor as well.

Suggestions?

Bad choice on the soil.... what additional nutes are you using? If nothing is the answer, then that is also your answer (IMHO) as to partly why you're seeing this.

Does your water have chlorine(will evaporate)... or chloramine(doesnt evaporate)?

Re: Problems With Leaves On First Grow

what type of miracle gro soil? Does it say "feeds plants for up to 9 months" on it? It could be lack of nutes if you're using the non-time-release soil (this is easier to fix than if you used the time-release).

That doesn't explain the turning up of the leaf, mine have curled under when that happens. What's the temp like at the top of the plant?

It's curious that the lower leaves are unaffected, that would be the typical nute burn I think, starting at the lower leaves and moving upward?

I'm no expert so please feel free to correct me.

Re: Problems With Leaves On First Grow

Is it possible the CFL burned it?....it was kind of close at one point....I adjusted it higher about 3 inches maybe a little more just in case. But the leaves have gotten alot worse since when the CFL might have caused it....

Re: Problems With Leaves On First Grow

So this is basically a collaborating effort I have with a friend. Basically he provides/is in charge of the materials with the process and I provide the space/care. He buys everything and he has not asked for my input of what kind of materials we should use....

Anyway we added some nutes to hopefully remedy this....he picked up Vigoro 'rose' plant food 12-6-10...is this the right move?

If that's entirely the problem it should...it's probably not the best nutes ever but it's certainly better than nothing. You've never confirmed your temps or exactly which miracle gro soil product you're using so it's hard to say. I'm not stoned like I was last night...it REALLY looks burned in my opinion....I would think a nute problem would be a whole plant or bottom-up type of problem. The curling up of the leaves is a reaction to high temps and the dead part looks like actual burn.

Anyone else feel differently?

Re: Problems With Leaves On First Grow

I don't have any way to know the exact temp..we don't have a thermometer..I guess you could say we're on a budget :\ .it has to be close to room temperature. This is a closet setup...we have a little fan for ventilation

As far the Miracle Grow Soil, it is....moisture control potting mix....with continuous release up to 3 months.

Every time you water, you're adding/releasing nutes, so don't add that fertilizer unless you're past 3 months or so. If you already have then just keep a watch on the plant but don't water more than needed, that will only compound the problem.

Maybe not, just leave them be for a few days....I mean don't let them dry out like they suddenly got moved to a desert but the more you water the more nutes you release from those time realease balls in the soil. Hopefully you've alreay watered enough to release all of those nutes already....I find that the MG time release is "feed for 3 months" but only if you have to water a couple times a month during that time....since you're in a small container that you've likely watered a couple times a week or more, you hoenstly may have used up that stuff already, or at least released it into the soil.

It's all really hard to tell....all you can really do is watch. Keep the conditions normal and see what happens.
