What to do about root rot?!?

What type of medium? hydro
Location: Indoors
What strain? Unknown (from a bag)
How old are the plants? Started around 9/11/08 in veg until 10/14, flowering since then.
What type of lights and how many watts? 150 HPS
How far from the lights?6" from light

What is the pH? appx 6
What are the temps and humidity in the room? 60-80, 65-75% RH
What size pots? 3" I.D.

Needless to say this is my first run, it's been a learning curve all the way.

I've put in place measures to prevent root rot for future grows, but I don't want to loose this harvest. You can see below in this picture that it appears as if the roots are coming back. Should I cut what appears to be the dead brown roots?

Thanks in advance!

Do you have anything covering the water from the light? The bucket should be sealed if it isn't.

Yes, I have 1/2" plywood covering the top of the buckets (net pots are recessed in there). The buckets are also painted white to help prevent light. That being said, I know I need to do something about the side of the buckets because I am still getting some light in there.

For the next grow I am thinking that I might just go with two black 5 gallon buckets...

Thanks for responding!

Hydrogen Peroxide will help, I have never had to use it and not sure of the amounts but it will sort out the problem.

Re: What to do about root rot?!?

I don't think it's Pythium (Root Rot) I can't see any black spots. Looks like It's algee and quite bad.

I found this, should cure your problems.
  • Make a solution (the amount equivalent to the size of your bucket) with plain water and 10ml of H2o2 (Hydrogen peroxide) added per gallon of water.
  • Empty the bucket containing the algae growth and scrub well.
  • Pour the H2o2 solution into the bucket through the top of your net pot.
  • Let this sit for about 1/2 hour and then dump and rinse through the top of the net pot with plain pH adjusted (pH5.5) water.
  • Dump again and then fill with your standard nute solution with 5ml of H2o2 added.
  • In a few days, when no signs of the slime are visible, dump the bucket and fill with your standard nute solution.

Re: What to do about root rot?!?

You might go to Dutchmasters website and research a product called Zone. I had the same problem and it kicked ass. It made the new roots go crazy while keeping the damaged roots from getting worse, and it saved the crop. It is fairly inexpensive and a little goes a long way. I now use it routinely, just in case there is any light leak into the buckets. All you need for 5 gallons is 1/2 tsp. There is a chart on the website for higher doses for more critical problems. It also works in conjunction with h2o2. Also, make sure your water temps are not to high, high temps promote algae growth. I try to stay at 65 degrees. Its hard to maintain that in a small enclosure. The zone has a different dose for higher temps that seemed to help me in the summer when my res temps were higher. (haven't been able to afford a chiller). Good luck with your problem.....hope my tidbit of info helps.......

Re: What to do about root rot?!?

UPDATE!!!

We kept the light away from the roots and started using Hygrozyme, an anti algae groth suppliment. Although the roots still have some brown color to them, they have appeard to grow back in as white. Here is how the plant is surviving...
