Wilting stems! please help

A friend of mine is using a bubble bucket set up and it's his first grow. Tonight he added new nutrients and water to the bucket after removing the old. Now the stems all of them, are wilting bad and very limp. PH is around 6.5 or so. The nutrients seemed to alter the PH of the water alot. After adding nutes, the PH was about 4.0 . So an alkoline was added to bring it up to about 6.0 or 6.5. Now the plant is wilting terribly. Could this just be stress? or the nutrients or what? he's concerned for the wellbeing of his plant. any help would be appreciated
