Lights.

Can I use Reptile Lights for my plants? Recently, I was growing using a sky blue repto 40watts light. I have a turtle so I would put the pot next to the turtles basking area( Hence the light was there) It looked to be growing very well but unfortunately the light bulb went dead and now I'm using cfls and because I have to buy another light for my turtle I was wondering if those lights would work with my plant. I mean, the lights are UV and althou they do not produce a great amount of light it is a great heat source. So what do you guys think? WOuld a Repto light work with MJ plants?

i wouldn't bother with them. The cfl's are sufficient if there are enough watts for the plants. I'd stick with cfl's man.

If i remember right, those reptile lights are made to give off lots of heat as well, which isnt good for mj of course.

thx

Cool, thanks. Now I know not to bother with lights that give off a large amout of heat because MJ likes light better than heat.

Marijuana plants need a certain spectrum (color) of light for maximum benefit and in some cases to even grow right. For veg purposes a 6500K spectrum is needed. For flowering a 2700K spectrum is needed. These are the colors of light the plants need to grow.

Reptile lights put off a UVB colored light. This light is beneficial during flowering but isn't the light needed for growing and actual production of buds. During flowering a plant is covered with trichomes to protect it from the UVB put off by the sun. The more UVB light there is, the more trichomes a plant is supposed to produce. Some people will add a reptile light to their grow room during flowering as a supplement to the lights in the right color spectrum.

CFLs will work fine and they are available in the 2 colors mentioned. I have found them at Walmart and Home Depot. I used to get the 6500K from Walmart and Home Depot had the 2700K for flowering. The last time I checked it seemed as if both stores now have both colors. One is a bluish colored light like those grow light tubes you sometimes see and the 2700K is more of a yellow/red colored light. You can not tell the exact color spectrum by looking at the light. Some are rated like 4000K and 5500K and aren't exactly right. The right color spectrums are available but you might have to check around.

Good luck.
