im watering a 5 inch newb plant with about 1/2 cup of water once a day is that right?

Only water after it has dried out 1-2 inches deep in the soil. Then if the pot and soil has good drainage, you can give it as much water as you like. Just make sure it dries out down to 2 inches deep before watering again.
