sick plants, friends first grow

as you can read in my title, my buddy is growing for the first time and he seems to be having some issues. here is a picture of his plant, he has a few of them all of which seem to have lower leaves yellowing, and in many cases what seems to be being eaten. These are outdoor and in soil, I realize that the two in the pictures need to be separated and not surrounded by other weeds etc, but are there any other suggestions. I talked to a friend he said try epsom salt, from others ive heard other things, just trying to get a diagnosis on what needs to be fixed.

spray the plants with neem oil and 3 drops of dish soap, or mix up some tabascco & cyanne pepper & dish soap spray the plants and area

I dont see the yellowing you mention , however the soil they are in looks awful wet clumpy and just nasty, they probabally just need a feeding maybe a little less water
