young plants getting killed by fert soil

I started my seedlings in ocean forest like an idiot.. and now im suffering the conciquences... I just took them all out of their pots and removed as much dirt as possible without raping the roots and transplanted into regular fertless potting soil..

You guys thing they have a chance or what? any other advice? should i water the shit out of them to try and wash the nutes out?

Uhhh...I have to disagree there killer. All I use is oceanforest with a slight amount of perlite (for draining) and 1tbsp dolomite lime per gallon of soil.

That's it - never had nute burn, never had a seedling die. Afterall, it's the best organic shit you can grab IMHO. I think you messed something else up - possibly didnt use dolomite? You sure they are burnt and not drowning?

he's correct there killer, you probabally just have more tolerant strains...there are many seedlings that have been thru here for diagnostics & were fert burnt in your soil.

I am under the impression from reading ingredients that Ocean Forest is organic with no fert additives, organic or otherwise. So how could he have nute burn unless he added it himself?

klutter, why do you add the dolomite lime? I read a post the other day that said lime increased ph although I was under the impression that it balances it.

dolomite lime dosent play a part in fert burn

dolomite lime raises the PH, and it buffers the PH of the soil.

Interesting. I thought all that was organic and just fine for the plants and never considered them "ferts" per se. But now that I think about it most organic ferts contain fish emulsion and earthworm castings. I guess they don't burn larger plants but can burn seedlings.

So the trick is to "buffer" your seedling with some starter soil til they get a couple leaf sets?

And on Lime, I'm about to make about 6 pots of soil for new seedlings. Is it a good idea to add lime from the start to raise the ph?

worm castings, composted manuer, fish emulsion etc etc its all organic but they all contain the elements that burn seedlings.

no the dolomite lime buffering is for your potted plants

ignore the dudes advice , nothing for seedlings for 4-5 weeks period!

If not Foxfarm ocean forest then what do you recommend? I planned on a final transplanting to ocean forest 5 gal pots. Is this ok, or should one just be cautious of which soil you start out in? On top of that, what is the best organic soil? So far I havent minded using MG organic choice, but would rather use something else.

Sorry, I should not have used the word buffer since it had already been used to talk about lime as a buffer. What I was talking about is what soil you put your seedlings in(I'm growing outdoors in pots). There's "starter soil" for seedlings but it has almost no nutrition in it. But I guess I need to surround my germed seeds in that so they are shielded from the strong soil for at least a couple weeks til they get stronger.
