Lightbulb Severe Heat Damage...

Hi everyone, this is my first posting and I'm in deep s**t. I hope someone can help.

I have started growing my own. I germinated four seeds and one turned out to be a female. After separating the female and putting it in a wardrobe (closet) with a set of four warm florescent lights on a 12/12 timer the female stared to flower nicely with many budding sites. Two weeks into flowering I decided to upgrade my setup to include a single 250W sodium for maximum yield. I set up the new light 30-40cm from the top of the plant, and attached a computer fan directed at the light to shift any build-up of hot air<O</O
<O
Unfortunately the weener of a fan wasn't powerful enough...<O
<O
After only 2 1/2 / 3 hours of the new light being on I returned to the wardrobe to find --to my horror-- that all of the large and most of the medium sized leaves had curled-up, gone crispy and died.

Totally Toasted.

<O<O
This was last night.
<O
<O
Can the plant be salvaged or is it now doomed to die?
<O
<O
PS <O
I realize now (way too late) that the light should be at least 60cm away from the top of the plant and that there should be effective ventilation in the form of extractor fans for enclosed spaces. <O

it should be fine, keep it at 60cm for a week, then u can lower it to 30-40cm, as long as the temps arent too high. It wasnt really the heat that did it, if u had a fan on it, but more the intensity of the light, switching from CFLs to an hps, and yes u need an exhaust fan

Thanx

Thanks B, so you think it was the shock of switching lights which may have caused this? I didn't think it was heat damage as it was only on for 2 hours, it's only a 250w light, and I didn't get a massive surge of heat when i opened the doors, but the effects seemed so severe for just light damage!

You've put my mind at rest B, thanx.

Will this set back the harvest time at all do you think? Will the plant now regenerate the large light absorbing leaves?

The space meausres about 60x60x200cm (WxLxH), I'm not sure what the grow space temp is the 250W HPS on as I'm in need of a thermometer, and I'd like to spend as little money as poss, no more than about 70 Euros, but i can strech to more if needed.

Plants have to be "hardened off". Just like when you start a tomato plant indoors. You need to gradually change the climate for them. They'll die if you plant them right away. There's a big difference between cfl's and sodium, both in heat and light intensity. But, you're right, 2 hours doesn't seem very long. I try to start the plants further away, then gradually (over a week) bring them closer to the light. I've found my plants start to wither at about 20c room temp. Last year was real hard when we had about a month of 18c days. I couldn't cool the grow-room more than the house itself.
