| ramblings of a pot head The following may seem to many, the random babblings of a “pot head”. Maybe they are, but they are my thoughts on the matter of marijuana. It seems to me that the reason for marijuana’s stigma of “evil” stems from ignorance. Many seem to have the opinion that people who smoke pot are generally stupid, good for nothing, wastes of breath. However, virtually every musician is known to toke reef and many philosophers did the same. Some of the brightest most intelligent people I know are everyday smokers. In my opinion the use of drugs can expand your mind. Open your mind to new ways of thinking. If nothing else it will provide you with yet another point of view and experience thus broadening your mind. Marijuana is not something that should be criminalized. Hell, it shouldn’t even be considered immoral. Pot should be celebrated for the joy, enlightenment, and bonds it can bring. Just from my suburban life, I can tell you if I didn’t smoke pot, I probably would still only know the friends and neighbors that I’ve had since kinder garden. This is common place in suburbia. Pot enables you to expand your friendships across neighborhood boundaries or race or class. Suburban life brings children up to lead boring pathetic materialistic lives. Most people here barley leave our little suburb. All they know is this materialistic, uniform life. They get no experiences outside of their little world. A world where you can’t build a tree house, or paint your own home something different from the four colors every other house in the area is painted. Your yard has to be perfectly trimmed and manicured or nosey neighbors will write letters to make you fix it. Kids are not aloud to be kids. They’re no longer able to go down the street for fear of kidnapping or molestation. How can we expect kids not to turn to drugs? To make their boring life a little more exciting and tolerable, they decide to smoke a joint or drink some beer or anything. What is so wrong with this? Why does the fact that I smoke a joint at night when I’m with my friends to relax, have some fun, and relieve some stress have to mean that my life is headed down the path of heroine addiction? It’s bullshit. Many of my friends, who smoke quite of bit of marijuana, I know, will be successful. For example a friend of mine who does drugs I know will do something important and meaningful with her life. She is currently the student government president of our school, one of the smartest people I know, and a good friend. She alone should completely demolish the stereotype of the pot head. She doesn’t sit around act dumb and just watch television all day. She reads, goes to museums, gets straight A’s, works hard, and also does drugs. Does this make her a bad person? Hell no it doesn’t! It doesn’t mean a god damn thing. She’s still a great person and one of my best friends. What’s different from her smoking weed and you drinking alcohol? Both of them alter consciousness. Yet alcohol is socially acceptable. You tell a person you like to go home drink a few beers and relax after a hard day. All they do is say “I hear you man, I wish I had a cold one right now.” Didn’t people have a similar view of alcohol that they today have of marijuana? Didn’t <?xml:namespace prefix = st1 ns = "urn:schemas-microsoft-com ffice:smarttags" /><st1:country-region><st1 lace>America</st1 lace></st1:country-region> learn anything from the failure of prohibition? Obviously not. Marijuana may not be for everyone, but shouldn’t the individual have that choice. They are not hurting anyone but themselves. We are all aware of the carcinogenic qualities of what we do. But it doesn’t matter. I, like the rest of the pot smokers, have weighed the pros and cons for myself, and it so happens that I’ve decided to do it. Basically when I get “high,” I like to sit and have intelligent conversations with my friends. Conversations about religion, philosophy, politics, and anything else of interest happening. I don’t get high and watch my sister jump into a pool and drown, or run over someone on a bicycle, like some commercials will have you believe. Don’t let someone else tell you what to believe, me, the media, the president or anyone. I would suggest only that you give it a chance. Open your mind to the possibility that maybe pot is not so bad. Possibly it’s not only for addicts and good for nothing kids. Maybe you’ll like it, find it refreshing. The choice should be yours to make and I encourage you to do so.

There are a lot of very smart evil people. They aren't being ignorant when they are being evil purposefully.

Most people associate Marijuana and it's use with sloth and a general disregard for anything sophisticated, but, like you said, some of the most intelligent people I've come to know over the years use or have used marijuana and hold no ill regards for it. Very well said +rep.
