i think you should tell him i mean dont tell him your a pothead just tell him you've done it on occasion. And then tell him you hope that doesnt change thign between you guys cause you like him, etc. I think something more or less around those lines shoudl do the trick.

i think that if he likes you enough he can look past the fact that u smoke and like u for who u are

See most people who dont smoke look at the negative things(although I dont see any negative things about it)but explain how it helps you,that's what I would do.
