Letter To My State Rep (Critisism Appreciated)

-First things first, I'm from Delaware and we like only have one rep in the House or something like that.

-Anyway...this is a paper I just finished for my English-110 class, I'm probably also going to mail it tomorrow to Mr. Representative.

-What do you all think? (Constructive Criticism Please)
(It's due in like 12 hours, so any constructive criticism is appreciated)

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

May 28, 2008
<o></o>
The Honorable Michael Castle
1233 Longworth House Office Building
United States House of Representatives
Washington, DC 20515-0801<o></o>
<o></o>
Dear Representative Castle:
<o></o>
I am writing to urge you to support H.R. 5842 and H.R. 5843, two bills introduced by Congressman Barney Frank (D-MA). The former, H.R. 5842, would permit the utilization of marijuana for various medicinal purposes in the states that have recognized the plant’s therapeutic purposes. The latter, H.R. 5843, is regarded as an “Act to Remove Federal Penalties for Personal Use of Marijuana by Responsible Adults.” Representatives Maurice Hinchey (D-NY), Dana Rohrabacher (R-CA), and Sam Farr (D-CA) have all cosponsored H.R. 5842 in addition to Representative Ron Paul’s (R-TX) support of the two bills. The proposals signify the first legislation presented to Congress regarding marijuana decriminalization in 24 years.
<o></o>
I have been an occupant of the state of Delaware for 17 years, residing in the small suburban town of Hockessin for the past 15 years. As a 19 year old college student at the University of Delaware, I have personally observed the public’s general approval of both bills. Obviously, our state government has not participated in a reform of the long-standing laws denying possible therapeutic advantages of cannabis. Nevertheless, a rational decision must be formulated regarding the future of medical marijuana programs implemented in 13 cannabis-tolerant states. In addition, federal laws pertaining to the possession of marijuana must be altered to reflect the American public’s general consensus on the topic. The most recent AARP National Poll confirms that approximately 72% of the American public supports the usage of marijuana for medicinal purposes. Other polls consistently show that somewhere between 33%-41% of US citizens support legalization of small, personal quantities of the plant. Analysts conclude that, since 1986, marijuana approval rates have doubled and have reached a record high.
<o></o>
Again, I urge you to please support H.R. 5842 and H.R. 5843, not only because of the overall nationwide acceptance of the plant, but also due to the possible financial benefits the country can gain. According to NORML (the National Organization for the Reform of Marijuana Laws), 738,915 individuals were put on trial for the possession of marijuana in 2006. Removing the hundreds of thousands of costly minor possession indictments would result in a significant sum of money. Utilization of the saved finances may be directed at the prevention of hard drugs, ultimately making America a safer nation. Hopefully, Congress can overlook the false traditional clichés regarding marijuana and initiate new legislation resulting in the removal of severe drug outbreaks, rather than directing efforts against a medicinal herb. Thank you for taking the time to consider my opinion and recognize my support of both H.R. 5842 and H.R. 5843.<o></o>
<o></o>
Respectively,<o></o>
<o></o>
Mr. Weedaholic420

was awesome until you signed your name. How you have it now is like a slap in the face to him for reading it... that's just my take -- especially using 'weedaholic' which is quite a negative connotation to the use of weed as it is :/

that's my only thought. peace easy

I second about the name signature on that. I hope your just reluctant to put your real name on this forum and if you do intend on sending this letter (and I hope you do) at least put a good fake name. Over all nice job.

Hmm, I'd rephrase "directing efforts against a simple plant." To something along the lines of directing efforts against a medicinal herb or something like that. A huge argument against legailzation/decriminilzation is people saying "You think it's a simple plant? Well you're wrong here's why..."

Just blazed, sorry if this makes a miniscule amount of sense

I dig.

Syntax and grammar are excellent. Very formal. Its almost as if a stoner didn't write it.

I like it. It's very well written and shows him a lot of respect.

One thing I'd do though if I were you, is to go to the DEA and ONDCP sites and read their arguments for keeping marijuana illegal. Then directly address those arguments in your letter, show the representative why those arguments are weak and the policies discriminatory.

You can't win an argument if you don't address the arguments put forth by your opponent.
