having the stem facing sideways alows the smoke to be evenly distributed through all the cuts. Terrible explanation, but they provide incredible diffusion and almost zero drag.

are you talking about stemless setups with downward facing in line holes underwater? i just bought a bubbler that works like this... smoothest smoke ive ever experienced. it totally pulverizes the smoke by making the smoke go through small holes often (there are usually like 4 or 6 in a row) unlike a lot of difusers you see where the smoke doesnt make it to each hole, inline pieces almost always force smoke out of each hole, making it pass through more water directly. i hear they're a bitch to clean. we'll see once i get it dirty
