Damn you are lucky an oz is a misdemeanor. Getting caught with an oz+ is a felony here in Hawaii... I honestly would've told the cop all the weed was mine and tried to get my friend out from the beginning. If its your car and you claim everything in it is yours I believe they only take you down.

I don't know about other places, but where I am (in the states) there's such a thing as internal possession for marijuana. (Not sure if it's just my state, tho.) So just because it's not on your person, doesn't mean you're still not in possession. Which is a bummer.

(This info is what I knew about 2-3 years ago, so it may not be accurate. Hell if I pay attention to anything anymore. )

You dont have to get read your rights unless they interrogate you so basically they can throw out all the things you say if they interrogate u without reading your rights.
