poppies can be great for a strained back or a migraine (I get these sometimes). The pods are very distinctive looking and invite people's curiosity. I recommend not scoring them and growing them in a secluded area.

You can make a "kick your headache's ass" tea out of the dried pod (without scoring and scraping) by just drying it and then giving it a whirl in a coffee grinder. Put it in a tea bob and you're all set.

Keep in mind though, this is an opiate and can be potentially addictive.

you wont get a very worth-while yeild by just drying the pods
i would score the pods then cut them and dry them.

It has to be refined from morphine, then from that.

I could have swore poppy plants were legal in the US. My grandma use to grow them, regular flower, it's not sketchy till you start cutting them. I say just grow them in your back yard, thats what i plan on doing.

I'm a gardener and the last post is solid advice. Just grow them outside in a flower bed with other flowering plants like cosmos, zinnia maybe some sunflowers behind them. In other words make it look like a flower bed. Many people grow poppies for their beauty. How many people have seen scored seed pods, many years ago I saw them in Turkey but none since so i wouldn't be terribly concerned. Oh yeah, poppies are cool weather plants that won't last deep into summer heat...............sutra

Responsible use of opium will NOT ruin someones life. I do not think the OP has intentions of making heroin out of his yield. If so, I would advise against this but if not a little opium won't hurt.
Heres somewhat of a comparison: Coca leaves are turned into cocaine but the leaves are a natural stimulant and if used properly are relatively harmless. Opium may be worse than Coca leaves but occasional use is not too bad in my books. ( I haven't and would never do heroin, but I have smoked opium.) Its just a relaxing smoke mix with a little greens tasty treat.

To clear up confusion: Opium contains morphine. Heroin's chemical name is diacetylmorphine. When you ingest heroin, it is broken down in the liver into morphine, as well as other things. Opium also has other things in it that traditional painkillers don't (mainly thebaine) that make you feel ultra-lucid.

as for the herion production comments, 10kg of opium ----> 1kg of heroin. 4 plants will yield you 7-10 grams or so.

First of all thanks to everyone who replied....and to you, I'm not selling it, I'm smoking it, I'd like to experiment.

And I'm no chemist I'm not turning it into heroin or morphine, opium is probly the oldest drug to date (Not a 100% on that) and I'd like to smoke history if you will.

True story from 1972: I was in a waiting room in a free clinic in Cleveland, because I thought I had gotten the clap. I was talking with this chick who was their for her heroin addiction, and she said one thing that stayed with me, and affected my life many times over:

Junkie Chick: Have you ever tried heroin?
me: Nope
Junkie Chick: Don't. You'll love it so much, you won't be able to stop.

I'm not saying smoking a little opium is going to make you a junkie, I'm just reiterating be careful.

Have a search around on the net for methods of extraction using dried heads (florists) and bubble bags. I cant find it now, however somewere a guy got 10g using dried heads (a lot) and bubble bags. Also its cliche (my spelling is shit) but be careful.

Hey, so thanks for all the replies (lets not turn this into a debate about opiates now.)

This is what I have ended up with.

I will be soil-growing them in my closet, with Cfl's, right now what i have is a normal cfl bulb (75 watt) and a UVB bulb from by deceased chameleon. (I will be replacing it with 3 more cfls soon)

I have included pics for a description of the lights. (again these are from the net, my camera is with my signifigant other)

This is the UVB light

And this is the cfl.

Do you think this will sprout them and last till the end of the month?

and how many flowers can i grow in a closet: 24 in. Deep, 6'5 Ft Tall and 3'10 Wide?

I live in Ireland so it can be cold until early June. I recommend only to grow them from 7 th June. I tried last year in May but lost half the crop from the late frost. I did not get a hit from them but I am ready to try again.

Opium poppies are illegal to grow in the US but that is mostly because of the serious heroin problems around the country. One MJ plant can get you in trouble with the law easily buy 4 or 5 Opium Poppies won't drag the police away from the Dunkin' Donuts for even a second. The things that get people in trouble for Poppies is Indoor growing, bleeding the poppies (for opium,) or massive plantations of poppies (usually for large amounts of heroin production. If you are only going to be growing a few plants I'd say they should grow outside as my plants usually grow taller outside but if you want to grow 60 then stay indoors.
