Picking Shrooms?

When picking live shrooms in the wild, how do you guys know which ones contain psilocybin?

I don't want to go out and pick some and have em be the posinous kind or do nothing to me.

My teacher once compared the scientific method to picking shrooms......he basically said you get a cap...a half white, half black piece of paper, put the cap halfway on each color, get the print and look at it under a microscope.....

You need to know what the mushrooms with psylocybin's spores look like before hand, but then you can basically compare them and figure it out...


I've personally never done this myself, and i would advise against it unless you know EXACTLY what your looking for in the spores....

Get a field guide book, and you will be set.

Personally in florida I just used the "bruising blue" rule, which is like 99% safe, but theres always a possibility.

I have picked at that field before like 8 times though, I was shown it by locals, so it was all good.

Use a book to identify them. Safest way, the bruising blue is safe, but there are one or two species that can kill you and they bruise blue.

Go to the Shroomery.com forums. They will tell you everything you will ever need to know about shroom cultivating/hunting/etc.

Edit: there are many many more mushrooms that are psychoactive than the ones that bruise blue.

grain fed animals are what you're looking for...my old roommate lived on a farm and after it rained shrooms would grow from the horse shit, but they were weak. if you live in a state that allows spore shipment id do that instead. good luck. be safe

first you need to decide what kind of mushrooms you want to find some grow in shit like the most common of those around me are liberty caps and cubensis also there are wood lover wich u will find in barked areas or around fallen trees like Psilocybe Cyanescens or Psilocybe Stuntzzi wich are really easy to find also species like Psilocybe baeocystis can be found growing in grassy areas

once you have thouroghly scouted an area pick all the different kinds that you find.
MAKE SURE YOU KEEP THEM SEPETATED!!!!!! then take them home and take a sporeprint of all of them usually the ones that contain psilocybin or psilocin will have turned bluewithin about about 5 minutes of being picked note that this does not make them safe to eat also there are many "look-a-like" mushrooms it. always be 100% sure of what species they are before u chomp them up i would recomend that you also breing an experienced freind with you or at least have a second opinion on the resultd of the sporeprint.

Well, I live in Indiana if that helps. But I always notice these mushrooms that grow on a big stack of wood from a few trees we cut down a while ago, noticed you said some grow on fallen trees so just wondering. I'll go pick some and post pictures.

STAY AWAY FROM SHROOMS GROWING ON WOOD! i'm pretty sure that anything growing on wood is poisonous. you really need to find a cow or horse etc. pasture. the best place to look for shrooms is right next to manure.

there is a field testing system based on sporeprints. poisinous shrooms have certain color spores while non-toxic ones another. i THINK it's red to brown colored prints that mean poison while blue, black and greys are safe, but DEFINATELY verify this at a mycology site! i lost the high times issue i had that had the info sadly, so i can't get it and it isn't in my fanaticus grow guide either. i'm thinking that the spore prints of safe shrooms match their bruising color, but this is really GUESSING. get a 2nd opinion from someone that KNOWS.

once you know the colors to avoid, all you need is sheets of white paper and a few minutes to test a strain.

no offense but the post above this is bad advice there are many psychedelic mushrooms that grow in wood but there are just as many poisonis ones as well also your just as likely to get a poisonis mushroom if you pick it out of some shit. the color of the sporeprint does not tell you if its poisonis it mearly helps you identify the species. dont give advice if you dont know what your talking about you could get somone killed that way especialy with shrooms. ALL BLACK AND GREYS ARE DEFINATYLY NOT SAFE! also when you are 100% sure of the strain never take a full does the first time even if you are sure you never know when you might make a mistake. if you post a picture and a sporeprint id be happy to give you a second oppinion. And by the way pokernaut all the mushrooms i eat come from barked or wooded areas (i dont like shit)

uh... excuse me! don't tell it to me, tell it to high times! those supposed experts are the ones that tell you what color spore prints are safe and which are poisinous. i didn't just pull that info out of my ass, i'm directly quoting them but just couldn't remember the exact colors.

and as to wood, you agree that alot of poisinous strains grow there, so i don't see your point on that. i read the damn article several years ago, and i made a POINT of saying GET A SECOND OPINION from an expert! all i remember from the article is THEIR recommendation of STAY AWAY FROM LOGS (unless you know what you're doing... possibly) as many poisinous strains grow there and stick to much safer manure where i THINK (again... i said THINK, NOT KNOW) they said poisinious strains don't grow.

i would never claim something i couldn't remember clearly as fact, ESPECIALLY when it could kill someone! give me some credit will ya! i told everyone to get second opinions from experts did i fucking not?

re-read my post carefully. if someone reads it incorrectly, that isn't my fault. i was trying to be helpful as well as cautious too.

now, would someone who has it, PLEASE dig up the high times article from a few years back that tells people how to hunt for wild shrooms and post their EXACT recommendations please.

your right i was to harsh on my post but even if you say to get a second opinion blah blah blah... i dont think its a good idea to tell somone whats safe and whats not if your not sure yourself. not everyone takes it upon themselves to go into indepth research. But anyways i apologize and my intentions wernt to insult you.

and about fly agaric they are hallucinogenic but ive done them once and they made me puke and once that was over the trip wasnt very plesent but if anyone has had a good trip with them i would like to know. but they seem to be the easiest to find and identify,they grow across the county i guess cause i live in washington and they grow all over. just dont eat to much
