whats the real significance of hairs on your bud?

ok the red hairs are what catches pollen not the "crystals" or trichromes. Now, for every set of two red hairs you have a calyx, or a false seed pod or in simplest terms a single cannabis flower.

The more red hairs, the more calyxes, the more surface area for cannabinoids rich crystals to develop and fatten. If you can see great crystal growth and you also see a LOT of red hairs you can safely assume that the inside of the bud you cant see is packed full of trichromes growing on an abundant amount of flowers.

I don't think red hairs get you any higher as my friend Casey and I trimmed a whole bowl of red hairs off of the bud that I grew and smoked it and didn't feel anything. Tasted really cool though.

the significance? A lot of red hairs means a very determined female reproduction. This combined with the fact that the plant is unfertilized means a potent smoke.

as was said before i think hey are more of an indicator, and are some kind of natural protection for the plant.

That's a cool theory. I've always read that it also has to do with protecting the plant from ultra-violet rays, which is why pot grown at higher altitudes is extremely good (Himalayan charas, Highland Oaxacan, etc.)

I'm pretty sure the hairs are a large part of the female reproductive organs on the plant. Considering they are the first thing to shoot out of the calyx when you are vegging plants.

I dunno why some of you guys are going off saying buds without red hairs must suck, some buds just don't produce nearly any red hairs and are still insanely chronic. The first strain I could think of off the top of my head would be hash-plant.. Usually hash plant with alot of redhairs will be a pretty shitty smoke, though strains like Kush tend to have a ton of hairs over the bud and will knock you on your ass after a few tokes...

I'm going with the Hairs are Pistils theory. Which is most likely more than just a theory, but fact. Don't feel the need to site any sources, as its already been done previously. I'm not sure on this, but I hear that red hairs by themselves actually don't have any THC.

That is not true, pistils can turn color from being to close to your light source, and are not an indicator of maturity. Trich color is how you want to judge maturity

but along with an outward abundance of trichrome growth, a lot of red hairs means many calyxes and thusly, you can safely assume it is more potent.
