the problem is that people assume the earth is here for us. it's not. we're just a byproduct of the earth. unfortunately, we have no natural predators anymore. if there were something that could reduce human numbers enough to keep them balanced based on birth/death rate, then that would be optimal. however, the chances of my whole "genetic creature brought back from the past and let loose in society to dominate the world as we know" fantasy are very, very low.

in short, the earth does not care about "feel good" emotions of humans. if we die, then we die. that's it.

Death by overpopulation is a media/environmentalist hyped urban legend. Some quick research will reveal that population growth in the West has slowed down drastically since the baby boomers due to increased use of birth control. Also, world population growth on a whole is expected to increase for another few decades, and than plateau. Also, if you haven't noticed, nature has a way of balancing us out.
