I'm actually considering packing things up next year and just hike around for a while. Definately going to do the whole AT during that time- then I want to see the midwest.

Another good book is 'A walk across america' by Peter Jenkins. Basically in 1973 (or maybe '72) he was very unsatisfied with the country and the people in it and was planning to leave the country. Instead he decides he would give this country one more chance and hike around the country to see it.

Probably anyone who gets fed up with society and people and civilization in general are apt to get this idea. It sounds so appealing why don't we all just get up and do it?

Because we are addicted to the comforts and lives that we have. Living without any technology, any electricity, any social contacts, "away from it all" is something only the smallest percentage of people can really do.

unfortunately "civilization" and the way modern man operates is the reason we are destroying our world at amazing rapidity.

That actually sounds like a great thing to do tho..

I remember when i was in europe the summer after eighth grade and met americans in paris who had been backpacking throughout the continent for several months.. i really envied them.
