If we change the definition to be the region of space that encloses all the objects we can presently observe, then I suppose there could be things outside... but then it's really more of *a* universe than *the* universe.

Here's an animation I found that really blows my mind. Does a good job of highlighting just how small we really are. Definitely watch it to the end. Warning, it is about 1.2MB, may take a while to download on some connections. http://i51.photobucket.com/albums/f3...2609635165.gif
Wow..that kinda put things in perspective. I had no idea really how small we were.

we are a small part of the universe BUT this DOES NOT equal insignificant

we are so far the ONLY planet known to contain life (or what we understand is life)

thus we are SIGNIFICANT in every size, shape and form

I'm not sure I agree with that. Do we then somehow become insignificant if life is found in abundance elsewhere? Certainly we are all unique, and that is special. Regardless of how big the universe may be, there is only one earth, and only one of each of us.

In the grand scheme of things, we are very very small. I wouldn't say that makes us insignificant or not special, but we should perhaps feel humbled by the incomprehensible vastness of the universe in which we live. It puts things in context. There is so much out there, just waiting for us. Maybe one day we will be out there.

That's a really nice view. +rep

Significant according to whom, according to ourselves? Self-significance? If there was no life on earth except for ONE human, are they significant?

If there is ONE grain of salt in the ocean with intelligent life on it, microscopic intelligent life (as we perceive it of course), are they significant? Bare in mind that these life forms on this ONE grain of salt do not have the ability to move to any other grains of salt. I guess they would be asking themselves the same question as us.

Watched The Universe on THC just now.

They're talking about objects in the sky billions of light years across.

"oh yea, they'll only be around for a few million years"

And here I sit, with approximately 50 years left. 50? In the big scheme of things, that's like, nothing.

THC + THC. It makes you think.

That's very cool.

After watching the OP's video, I gotta say...the sheer size of the universe is amazing. How anyone can possibly disregard Intelligent Design is either not thinking or not willing.
