In the video she mentions that they suspect the Bonobo's have their own language. Though, it is probably outside the range of human hearing (in some cases). So, we will need technology to possibly understand them, and their contact with us, will only help speed up their development. I would be interested in seeing where the Bonobo is 1000 years from now. Perhaps I shall live that long and find out?

20 to 30 years from now there will no longer be a viable breeding population in the wild. A thousand years from now they will stuffed specimens and images on film. If we're lucky.

I am sure they will survive in captivity, if your prediction comes to pass. Which I find unlikely. Of course, this is not the thread for that discussion.

Bonobos populations have been decimated by habitat destruction, war, and poaching. They are now being considered as candidates for the Endangered Species list. This isn't a nebulous prediction I pulled out of a hat. It is information based on scientific research and data.

They will go the way of the thylacine and the Dodo.

I thought this was a discussion about Bonobos. How is my information not pertinent?

I do not think they will go extinct, as there will be some in "captivity". We could always start a Bonobo sanctuary somewhere in Florida or something.

Any links, I would be interested in reading them?

It is. I thought we were heading into a global warming discussion, though. My bad.

Estimates put the Bonobos population at around 5,000. This is precariously close to the point of no return, genetically speaking. Some researchers believe that there may be pockets of bonobos hidden deeper in the Congo but no evidence supports that claim as of yet.

I'm keeping my fingers crossed.

The most fascinating fact abuot Bonobos is that they have been under our noses for so long and we didn't know they were a new species of great ape. They branched off from the common chimpanzee over a million years ago.

Goes to show that there are things still to be discovered in this world. Like Jane Gooodall, I'm a firm believer in Bigfoot.

Thanks for bumping this thread, It truly is an amazing find.

To say that these bonobos are merely doing "tricks" is utterly ridiculous.

This is the kind of bogus "evolutionary story" that's being propagated as "here's what happened...we got proof" bunch of bunk. Scientists find a bone fragment and a stick, next thing you know their building a city around it with stories of conflict between neand's and cromag's. it's just stunning people can buy into this garbage and then say, "there is no God"??

you might as well ask the question "why do woodpeckers have long beaks and cardinals don't?" well gee wiz it's because they've adapted differently to their environment.
Why don't clams have beaks? Why are all the ferns identical to fern fossils? Where's the mutation?

I know a guy born and raised in Alaska who has no body hair. Should he be killed off to save the species?

I find the attempt to use evolution to disprove the existence of a higher power (or vice versa) to be pretty pointless and irrelevant. At their very core, the two concepts aren't directly related.... one describes a technical process, while the other describes a metaphysical concept. In my mind at least, they are completely independent of one another.

i would love to be in that lady's position..
i liked the parts where you could see how they were just observing and learning.. like with fire.. or even when he was playing pacman that was pretty amazing too
i think that the fact alone that they are capable of things like that now means they most likely will continue to improve on their abilities in the future

I dunno. Unlike other chimps, Bonobo's are rather peaceful. Probably because they sleep with everything in sight . It is possible that we could influence them to violence, but I do not believe we will ever be threatened by them.
