The god who wasnt there

Discussion in 'Religion, Beliefs and Spirituality' started by kronman907, Sep 2, 2011.

  1. How can religious people watch this on Netflix and still say the idea of god and Jesus is real? Just asking

  2. I love a lot of his ideas, I'm not sure about the accuracy of all his sources. Documentarys are awesome but they have to be taken with a grain of salt. I am not a believer in god so I don't find his ideas hard to swallow, but someone who is strong in their faith could easily watch that movie and quickly dismiss it out of hand. That is why I worry about his sources, people jump all over any weakness they can find to justify rationalizing their faith.

  3. Because the Spirit seals our hearts and guards our minds in Christ. His grace is completely irresistible for us no matter how foolish it seems to the world

  4. 70 virgins are also quite irresistible.

  5. when best selling christian books are mostly about using god to make money or Rob Bell and Brian McLarens heresies, it's hard for me to believe that "the spirit" is sealing or guarding anything in most christians minds. Chistianity has changed with every cultural change and will continue to. If you look at the trends throughout church history, the mind of the church is sealed and gaurded by what is culturally acceptable.

  6. I haven't actually watched this documentary, so excuse my ignorance.

But is it really possible to disprove individualist interpretations of a deity? Negative proof is a very difficult thing to find.

Yeah I don't blame you for doubting. I can't prove it to you

  8. Am I missing something?

  9. Just so you know I used to be a christian and for most of my life believed all the doctrines. I like your approach though, you seem pretty level headed for the most part in your posts.

there's actually not anything in the Quran that specifies 70. just that its a wonderful place with gardens and streams and young unmarried unchild-having women, which is what virgin meant back then

  11. If you were just closing your own mind and refusing to change, would you fairly be able to spot a difference between that and this idea that God is helping you close your mind to the idea of his nonexistence?

I couldn't prove to you the difference, but I can personally tell. I can expose myself to some persuasive points or even this video and instead of immediately saying they're wrong I reason with them. I try to understand and if I find a gap, I usually have peace to accept the error.

  13. I don't believe in god. Hypothetically lets say that you and I die together and our souls are judged, but god decides to give you complete decision on the fate of my soul. Would you send me to heaven or hell?

  14. I believe in a God. But not in the way you perceive it/he/she to be.

I also think Buddha was a better Jesus than Jesus. Jesus only made it 3 years into his business. And according to who you ask, there have been 6 or 11,000 Buddhas. Just enlightened regular Joes, not some sort of avatar of God itself. The mysticism of the East has lent a certain social and cultural stability over a 5000 year period or so to some regions.

The teachings of Jesus held the west together after the fall of Rome for a good thousand years or so until the Enlightenment came along. But the fervor of his "flock" has waned greatly since it's height several centuries ago. Maybe Jesus was simply a "buddha candidate" who was tricked by another Buddha so that he could culturally hold the west together because Buddha saw a future more terrible than our current one. Maybe that's why a buddha appeared to the Jewish community early on and told them a prophecy of them being "chosen people." How do you guys know the gods don't trick each other just like they did in the greek mythologies? How do you know jesus wasn't a noob god tricked by a more elite god for a "higher purpose?"

And if you don't understand the 4th and 5th dimensions, then talking about all this stuff is a bit pointless. Time is very very tricky. And so is space. Especially when you're a buddha trying to navigate the Earth to the best possible futures. The wrong word can forever mess up the future and bringing karma back to balance could take forever too.

If I, a human can imagine up this scenario, then how much more creative can God be? I'm guessing a lot more creative.

And besides, it's not God's job to tell you he's there. Live or don't live. It's up to you. That's what God gave you freedom. Freedom to believe he's fake. Freedom to make up the scientific method of inquiry which cannot find god. Because the opposite is slavery. God is smart because he wants you to figure it out for yourself like a good parent does. But if you don't believe that's totally cool. It doesn't really matter if you do or not anyway. Because you can die believing you just become nothing, then you wake up and go "WTF, i thought you were FAKE!?!?!?" lol

don't take it so seriously though kids.
    God's supposed to be fun.

  15. Thanks, any credit goes to my Lord
If I were judging by God's standards, I'd send you and the rest of humanity (myself included) to hell unless your Lord is Jesus.

  16. but lord jesus didn't believe in hell, nor going to heaven. heaven was the place of god to him, and no one else.

  17. I am asking you to judge me by your standards. Do you think I am deserving of eternal torment and hellfire just because I choose not to believe in something?

  18. Jesus certainly spoke about hell. In fact, Jesus spoke more about hell then anyone else in the Bible.

Here's one of many excerpts from Jesus' teachings about hell
    Mark 9:43-48

  19. It seems like science and the concept of god are beginning to come together anyway. Just studying the Quantum world is enough to open the minds of many previously closed researchers to this possibility. You should take a look at the work of quantum physicist, Amit Goswami, also known as the quantum activist, if you haven't come across him already. One of many enlightened scientists out there.

i guess the core essence of faith in a creator comes from the fact it cannot be interpreted physcially. This is a major hurdle researchers and skeptics face as they are conditioned, manipulated and sculpted into accepting only things they can comprehend with there five sense and anything beyond that cant be accepted.

    God is the big picture.
Science is the small broken down picture.
