Friends who don't like smoking

Alright I'm a weekend smoker, and I probably smoke about a gram every couple of months, never more than .5 at a time. I don't smoke at all from Feb. to August because of swim season, so the fall and winter months are when I toke most often. I have a really great group of friends, four or five of us usually and we hang out every weekend. We all drink, but I am the only one who smokes. We've been friends all throughout high school, and for all four years I have occasionally offered my smoke to them. One time two of them smoked with me, and it was pretty great. Lately, though, I've been hanging out with people who smoke, and I like to make plans to blaze with them occassionally. I was hanging out with my non-smoking friends and talking to my smoking friend on the phone about when we should blaze. After I hung up, my one friend said flat-out, "You need to stop smoking weed." I was pretty offended by this remark, and my other friend says as he always does, "Weed makes you dumber." I have sent them links to the Erowid articles that describe the effects of weed on the brain and what not, but they were on my case for about an hour about what I should and shouldn't do. I am by no means a regular stoner--I smoke such a small amount that I can make a 3-5 gram stash last a whole year. I was particularly disturbed by this friend's comment because he A) Has never smoked before, B) Has no idea how little I smoke, and C) Thinks that weed is terrible with no personal experience to back up his bias. What do you guys think I should do? For now, the issue is dropped, but I fear that it will come up again in the future. Cutting off the friendships is no way an option, so what can I do? I definately will continue to smoke marijuana, so that is not an option. Should I approach them again or leave it alone and hope that they will understand my feelings better. pfft, tell them to get off their high horses and read a book! I had a similar conversation with my dad who doesn't know I smoke like every day. He was like "yeh, well i mean, alcohol's fine, it's been around forever, it's perfectly safe when compared with marijuana." and i'm all like "yeh, sure." which required a great deal of self-restraint because I research drugs from a philosophical, spiritual, medical, and recreational level with an emphasis in marijuana (all as a hobby) and KNOW that marijuana is definately not harmful when compared to cigarettes or alcohol.

My advice to you is to simply pick up any book that contains scientific studies about both the benefits and problems that occur with occasional marijuana smoke, and then once read surprise your friends with your backed up knowledge of the subject. Once they find out you've done your homework they may change their mind about the subject, or at the very least shut the fuck up because they'll feel embarrased that they condemned you for doing something that they don't even know shit about.

Don't mean to sound angry about it, it's just that I get that more often than I'd care for, so I know where you're coming from.

I mean, I was talking to my roommate about how the opium trade overshadowed marijuana during the Imperialist movement in China, and he was all like "yeh, but they come from the same plant, so how could the opium and marijuana trade be divided like that?" and i just looked at him with eyes wide and was like "dude, I'm the one who's supposed to be slow here, I smoke mj and you think it comes from the same fucking plant as opium?"

yeah dude i told them that i know a whole lot more about weed than them. i've gone on erowid many times and i have analyzed the differences between alcohol (which they favor greatly) and marijuana and i told them that i think weed is a lot safer than alcohol. They're being pretty ignorant so i just said, "you're not my mom so stop acting like it." it really pisses me off that this happened because they think they know everything about the drug and my usage of it when they really just don't like it that i'm having fun smoking with other friends.

Find one of their hobbies that you don't share with them (baseball, model rockets, strip clubs, whatever). Tell them that they need to stop because it's making them dumb and killing their brain cells. When they say, "No it's not! Prove it!" try to subtlely get them to make the connection. Haha, I just realized that subtlely is a funny word and I don't know how to spell it...haha, subtle subtle subtle...whooo I'm buzzin'

Dude, marijuana is a plant. I think it's been around longer than alcohol has.

But to add on this. A lot of people i know look down on it and look down on me. I say fuck them and their ignorance. They are no one to tell me what is right when they drink every weekend. People are just ignorant. This same shit happened to me when I gave a speech on legalization today. All these uppity ass conservative kids asking me questions and making assumptions based on the wrong facts.

This is a crappy position to be in, but sooner or later they'll probably just accept it. You have no obligation to check your choices with your friends first... you're an individual and highly capable of making your own decisions... make sure they know that. I've found in my experiences that it's easier to just lay down the law up front and people will back off.

FUCK EM. Sorry but i mean, if they cant trust that you know what your doing, they dont sound liek real friends. My friends that dont smoke would never diss that i smoke, especially my "best" friends. In their case, ignorance does not equal bliss.
