you only let go of the carb when you are finished your hit and you want to clear the piece of all the smoke inside so there

isn't any stale smoke left inside your piece

I think the question has already been answered in pieces, but here is what I have to say.

First of all, most people call it the carb. A shotty is when you blow smoke into someone elses mouth(usually a girl). The carb has two main purposes, the first is to clear the smoke out of the piece. If you don't clear the piece, the smoke sits there and gets stale and tastes like shit. The second purpose is to force all the smoke down into your lungs. If you don't, there is a lot of smoke still in your throat and mouth...not getting you high
