Neurology Wizards?

I'm wondering if anyone knows anything about 5-HTP, St. John's Wort, Prozac, or magnesium as marijuana potentiators?

I'm no neurology wizard, but I've used 5-HTP before. Take it about an hour before smoking, and it can greatly increase your high. I've heard similar things about St. John's Wart, just never actually tried it. 5-HTP is a serotonin precursor, and I think St. John's Wart is some form of SSRI, not too positive on that one off the top of my head.

5-HTP is, like dr dro said, a serotonin precursor and I believe one of the psychoactives in MJ has affinity for serotonin receptors. Anyways, it definitely works, and is one of the best "potenitators" I've ever done. It makes the high way more psychedelic and also speedy. Sometimes it can make people freak and have anxiety attacks, but I always was fine.

St. John's Wort is a serotonin, dopamine, GABA, noradrenaline, and glutamate reuptake inhibitor. It really hasn't done much for me in medicineal applications, or for MJ potentiation.

Prozac, some people have said, increases the high. I was on 20mg once daily and felt absolutely no difference in my high.

never heard of using magnesium, where did you hear that?

i remember one of my professors (and this was biotech class, so hes super smart, and unbiased with all drugs since thats a lot of wat the class was about) saying that saint johns wart is bad, or causes somehting bad... im not sure what, but i do remember his saying that all these people have been using it for centuries beleiving it to be helping them with something that it was actually hurting... so, at least research it before u try it

Didn't know that about St. John's Wort, looking into now. By the way, had no idea it was "wort", not "wart" haha.

yea, i really dont even remember what it was he said about it, but i do remember him mentioning it having adverse effects, opposite to previously beleived... i know thats vague but its the best i can do lol

and i saw something about levodopa acting as, either a potentiator with weed, or keeping your tolerence low... but im not 100% because i couldnt find much info on it... which also makes me question its availability

I came across this, it's about like chemotherapy mostly:

Quote:
The research, conducted in the Netherlands, was based on previous observations that St. John's Wort increases levels of certain enzymes in the body. In turn, these enzymes can cause common drugs in the body to be processed more quickly than normal, weakening their effect. The researchers wondered if St. John's Wort might also be decreasing the blood level of a patient's chemotherapy during cancer treatment.
From http://www.cancer.org/docroot/NWS/co..._Treatment.asp

I got sidetracked watching TV for a while, that's all I got so far haha.

Edit: From http://www.essortment.com/family/hea...efits_sjlb.htm:

Quote:
St. John’s wort has been proven to react poorly with certain medications such as chemotherapy, drugs used to treat HIV patients, and some other prescriptions. Some people experience a negative reaction to the herb, including dizziness, stomach upset and vomiting, diarrhea, fatigue and sensitivity to sunlight.

Herbal supplements, like St. John’s wort, are not under strict guidelines from the FDA concerning testing and safety. Because of this, herbal supplements can be sold without studies on dosages, safety or even effectiveness. Depending upon where you purchase St. John’s wort, the strength can be unpredictable and the quality poor. Still, St. John’s wort is much cheaper than many prescription medications and has much fewer side effects.

New studies are currently being conducted to decide if St. John’s wort can be used to treat a variety of mental illnesses, including depression, anxiety and mood swings. Talk to your doctor before switching from prescription to herbal supplements.
And for the ladies:
Quote:
Contraceptives
St John's wort may interact with birth control pills and may reduce the effectiveness of oral contraceptives by up to 50%.

in general i think st. johns wort is pretty effective as a mild serotonin re-uptake inhibitor however it has been shown to have fatal interactions with anesthethics specificaly making them much harder to "come out of". St. Johns wort can also make skin more sensitive to light but on the flip side it contains a compound that is a broad spectrum antibiotic that even some pharmeceutical grades can't match

ya "wort" used to mean plant...

I dropped 200mg of 5-htp one .3mcg SJW extract and about 250mg of Magnesium i then took 2 hits and freaked the fuck out. There was so much neurological firing in my head i could literaly feel a buzzing it was scary and really really intense. I am now trying to harness these powers for good haha

as far as the magnesium I've read it makes you more dopamine-sensitive and also helps rebuild dopamine machines, but try it sometime i think it it intensifies the high pretty well and it keeps you from building tolerance

vitamin c i think is complete bs tho
